U-Pb isotopic dating of columbite-tantalite minerals : development of reference materials and in situ applications by ion microprobe Ghent University KU Leuven
The magmatic-hydrothermal transition in pegmatites and its effects on rare metal mineralization: insights from melt-crystal-fluid interactions in phosphate minerals from the Buranga dike (Rwanda) KU Leuven
This PhD project aims to understand the magmatic-hydrothermal differentiation process recorded at the Buranga pegmatite system (Gatumba District, Western Province, Rwanda). The Buranga dike is a type-example of a phosphorus- and boron-rich lithium-cesium-tantalum (LCT) pegmatite and well-known for its Ta-Sn-Nb mineralisation and its rich variety of primary and secondary phosphate minerals. The phosphate mineralogy records the magmatic, ...
Identification of tunnel structures in manganese oxide minerals using micro‐Raman spectroscopy Ghent University
Manganese oxides have attracted the interest of many researchers due to their broad application field. These oxides possess various electrochemical, adsorption and catalysis properties and are as such applied in the industrial context, for example, steel industry, catalysis and removal of toxins in the ground or in waste water. In the archaeometrical field, manganese oxides have been used as pigments on various artefacts such as pottery and rock ...
Crystal structures of shlykovite and cryptophyllite: comparative crystal chemistry of phyllosilicate minerals of the mountainite family KU Leuven
We solved the crystal structures of the phyllosilicates shlykovite, KCaSi4O9(OH)·3H2O, and cryptophyllite, K2CaSi4O10 ·5H2O, two minerals recently discovered in the Khibiny alkaline complex (Kola Peninsula, Russia). Both minerals are monoclinic with close values of the a, b and ß parameters but significantly different c parameters: shlykovite a -6.4897(4), b = 6.9969(5), c = 26.714(2) Å, β = 94.597(8)°, V = 1209.12(15) Å3, sp. gr. P21/c, Z = 4; ...
Mineral accretion in nursing piglets in relation to sow performance and mineral source Ghent University
The present study investigated the effect of a moderate substitution of inorganic mineral sources with chelated mineral sources from four weeks prior to parturition throughout lactation on sow and litter performance. In addition, the aims were to determine whether the mineral source and litter performance affect mineral status and accretion in piglets at birth and at weaning. Forty gestating sows in a commercial pig herd were selected and ...
More bone with less minerals? The effects of dietary phosphorus on the post-cranial skeleton in zebrafish Ghent University
Dietary phosphorus (P) is essential for bone mineralisation in vertebrates. P deficiency can cause growth retardation, osteomalacia and bone deformities, both in teleosts and in mammals. Conversely, excess P supply can trigger soft tissue calcification and bone hypermineralisation. This study uses a wide range of complementary techniques (X-rays, histology, TEM, synchrotron X-ray tomographic microscopy, nanoindentation) to describe in detail the ...
