Gender, migration and distance. Maidservants as agents of change in the democratization of long-distance migration: a comparative case study of international migration by men and women to Brussels and Antwerp, 1850-1900. University of Antwerp
The global rise of modern borders and irregular maritime migration networks (1882-1938): comparing Atlantic with Pacific migration systems Ghent University
The project analyzes the establishment of global racial barriers on migration, the formation of irregular migration networks, the attempts by states to regulate migration transnationally and the central role of shipping companies in this process during the first period of accelerated globalization (1882-1938). It compares this for Pacific and Atlantic migration to the US and how this affected migration policies in the Americas.
How Do Migration Networks Facilitate African Student Mobility and Integration In China? - - A Social Network Perspective on South-to-South Migration KU Leuven
My proposed research project focuses on the South-to-South Brain Drain from Africa to China. In particular, I am interested in the education and occupation composition of these African student migration groups in comparison to the other African global mobility patterns, their different migration destination allocation within China, and their social assimilation with the local community and communication within their own immigrant groups ...
Accessibility of substance abuse treatment for persons with a migration background: A qualitative analysis of five treatment centers and problem users with a migration background in Flanders, Belgium Ghent University
We examine social mechanisms and factors linking the cumulative effect of socio-economic disadvantage and substance abuse service disparities for users with a migration background. We study the following hypothesis: "disparities in substance abuse services arise when disadvantages in the health care system interact with those in the community system" (Alegria, 2011: 377) in a cross-case analysis of five treatment facilities.
Enhanced migration measures from a multidimensional perspective KU Leuven
The significance of migration as a social, political and broader public concern has intensified significantly. Migration is increasingly seen as a high-priority policy issue by many governments, politicians and throughout the world.
As well as migration projections and scenarios that are essential for appropriate planning and effective policymaking, a deeper understanding of the root causes and drivers of migration and of their ...
Effects of intrinsic factors and habitat fragmentation on the migration behaviour of diadromous fish Ghent University
Animal migration is a widespread phenomenon. It evolved to maximize survival and reproductive success by stimulating the movement between critical habitats such as reproductive and feeding grounds. Diadromous fish species show extensive migrations, in which they bridge vast distances between foraging and spawning habitats in freshwater and marine environments. Behavioral traits like migration speed and timing likely evolved to reach critical ...
Consequences and Policy Implications of International Migration Ghent University
Never before have so many people been living outside their country of birth. If migration keeps growing at its current pace, the global migrant stock could grow from 214 to 405 million between 2010-2050. A clear understanding of its causes and effects is crucial to develop sound policies to manage it.
Despite significant process in the recent literature, a number of key issues still need exploring. The project has two main objectives and ...
