In conventional high-resolution X-ray computed tomography (micro-CT), the internal and external morphology of an object or patient can be determined in 3D. This is a very powerful and very common technique in medicine, but also in material science, geology, biomedicine, etc. it is becoming increasingly popular. However, a conventional CT scan measures the local X-ray linear attenuation coefficient which often doesn’ provide sufficient ...
This project studies graphs which can be used to represent spatio-temporal networks from geographical information science (GIS). Because of an additional aspect of 'time' and the large amount of data in a typical GIS-problem, standard graph algorithms cannot be used as such. We study a.o. accessibility properties, techniques for keeping GIS-data up-to-date and route planning.
The human brain still outperforms digital computers in its flexibility and in its performance on pattern recognition tasks like image and speech recognition Moreover, it is able to achieve this at very modest power consumption levels, typically the power equivalent to a light bulb, whereas (super)computers require orders of magnitude more power In this project, we want to take inspiration from the brain to build a novel class of computing ...
The main goal of this project is to develop reasoning techniques and algorithms to cope with spatial information in the context of, predominantly geographical, information retrieval systems. The vagueness, unreliability and diversity of the available information will play a central issue in this.
Currently, deep learning is rapidly providing breakthroughs for various proteomics prediction tasks. However, long-range interactions between disparate areas of a protein sequence, imposed by the 3D structure, are generally not exploited yet in these models. Context-aware embedding models recently revolutionized the field of natural language processing, with long-range dependency modelling as a key feature, and promising results have also ...
To date, most ICP – mass spectrometers are equipped with a “scanning-type” mass analyzer (quadrupole filter, sector-field MS). In the case of short transient signals, this may restrict elemental analysis to a single-nuclide approach. Recently, a new type of ICP-time-of-flight-MS (ICP-TOFMS) was developed, enabling quasi-simultaneous monitoring of the full mass spectrum (21 000 full mass spectra /s) and a fast read-out of the signals. Both ...
