Treatment with immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) is becoming the systemic “standard of care” for an increasing number of cancer patients. The purpose of this treatment is boosting the host immune system to destroy the cancer cells but, unfortunately, it is very costly and only a fraction of patients (20-40%) show response. Accurate and rapid prediction of response could avoid undergoing this costly treatment unnecessarily while enabling ...
The general objective of the proposed research is to better understand the regulation of the human immune response to S. pneumoniae. The specific aims are:
Colorectal cancer (CRC) tumours can be divided into Microsatellite Stable (MSS, 95%) and Microsatellite Instable-High (MSI-H) tumours. Most MSS tumours are immunologically cold, i.e. cannot be recognized by the immune system, thereby hindering immunotherapy. We propose two hypotheses why MSS CRC tumours are non-responsive to immunotherapy: i) CRC tumours are cold due to immune-suppressive colon mechanisms; or ii) CRC tumours started out warm ...
Investigate cigarette smoke-induced macrophage reprogramming, which may be responsible for corticosteroid resistance in COPD patients. This innate imprinting can also neutralize the macrophage-mediated suppression of DC-function and -migration and contribute to the adaptive immune response in COPD. The adaptive immune response (including lymphoid neogenesis) will be further investigated using CCR7 deficient mice
Our mousemodels clearly suggest a role for the EMT transcription factor Zeb2 in the immune response associated with skin pathologies. The aim is to study the implications of Zeb2 expression in skin cells for the immune compartment and how this accelerates disease. Secondly, it will be determined whether there is a specific role for Zeb2 in the immune compartment itself.
Peyer's patches play an important role in the development of the normal mucosal immune response furthermore this is the region where first manifestations of Crohn's desease (CD) occur. Smoking has a detrimental role in CD pathogenesis we want to investigate the influence of cigarette smoke on mucosal immunity and receal how this can lead to the development of CD
