Model-based active thermography for contactless quality assessment in the agro-food industry KU Leuven
In the agro-food industry, there is an increasing demand for non-destructive quality inspection tools that allow to inspect every individual product. This is the result of an increased focus on food safety and quality over the past decades. Several fast, non-destructive and contactless technologies have been studied for food quality inspection, many of them based on the interaction of electromagnetic radiation with the food product. ...

Binders and Monoliths from Bauxite Residue (Red Mud) KU Leuven
Bauxite residue (BR), the alkaline waste produced in the Bayer process for the production of alumina is generated in vast amounts and is essentially landfilled on disposal sites. An increasing lack of storage area, several accidents as well as potential risks for health and environment have led to a rethinking in the bauxite residue management. Currently, the reuse rate in the construction sector is approximately 1 %, which is mainly due to ...
Properties of plasma during uniturbulence KU Leuven
I will be working on the 'Properties of plasma during uniturbulence'. Recently, we discovered that the plasma can become turbulent, even if only unidirectional waves are present. We need to study the properties in this new turbulent regime. We will compute the energy transfer rate, structure functions, etc. Overall, the goal is to assess in which solar structures this new turbulent regime is occurring, in how far it contributes to heating.

Therapeutic potential of high-density lipoproteins in heart failure with reduced ejection fraction KU Leuven
Plasma high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol levels and plasma levels of its major apolipoprotein (apo), apo A-I, are inversely correlated with the incidence of coronary heart disease. The potential protection conferred by HDL against ischemic cardiovascular diseases has been most often attributed to its role in reverse cholesterol transport. However, HDLs exert divergent functions that include actions mediated by signalling via ...
Spatially distributed recharge and groundwater – surface water interactions in groundwater models: from the field to the catchment scale KU Leuven
Flow and transport in lowland area aquifers are strongly influenced by recharge processes and interactions with the surface water network. In lowlands, the groundwater table is close to the topographic surface. Therefore, the interactions between groundwater, atmosphere, soil, vegetation and surface water take place over short distances, within the so-called critical zone. Because of these short distances and the non-linearity of flow ...
Role of photodynamic therapy in the prevention of intimal hyperplasia KU Leuven
Role of photodynamic therapy in the prevention of intimal hyperplasia.
Endovascular treatment of symptomatic atherosclerotic peripheral artery disease (PAD) is recommended as the primary revascularization strategy in many clinical and anatomic scenarios. Although percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) has a high initial success rate, restenosis remains the Achilles heel. Restenosis rates up to 60% are reported. Restenosis has a ...
