The role of macrophages in the pathogenesis of diseases with an affected gut-liver axis Ghent University
The liver and the gut are anatomically and functionally interconnected via the enterohepatic and portal circulation (gut-liver axis). Intriguingly, chronic liver disease is characterized by increased gut permeability (leaky gut) which contributes to further disease development. Here, we wish to unravel
the role of macrophages, innate immune cells, in the gut-liver axis in chronic liver diseases with concomitant gut inflammation.
