The ribosome is the molecular machine in the cell that translates messenger RNA into proteins. We recently found inactivation of the ribosomal protein RPL5 in T-cell leukemia patients. We now found that RPL5 is recurrently inactivated in various tumor types including brain cancer (glioblastoma) and skin cancer (melanoma), establishing RPL5 as a tumor suppressor gene in cancer in general.
