Unravelling the interplay between the bacterial fish pathogen Flavobacterium columnare and the hypothalamus-pituitaryinterrenal axis of their host under acute and chronic stress conditions Ghent University
demand. This proposal aims to unravel the interplay between the bacterial fish pathogen Flavobacterium columnare and the stress response mediated via the hypothalamus-pituitaryinterrenal (HPI) axis of its host under acute and chronic stress conditions. Hereby a marked contribution will be made to i) the use of the cortisol content and glucocorticoid (GC) profile of scales as a reflection of the fishU+2019s exposure to chronic stress as this ...

RIver flow regulation, fish BEhaviour and Status - MSCA-RIBES Ghent University
In 2016 serious concerns on the achievement of the EU Biodiversity Strategy 2020 targets, due to the continuing loss of biodiversity and degradation of aquatic habitats, led to the urgent adoption of a new Resolution for implementing ecosystem restoration measures. Moreover, on December 2018 the EU raised to 32% the binding renewable energy target for 2030, bringing further input to hydropower development. Meeting these targets sets ...
Win-win protein: reconciling fish protein generation and water quality management. Ghent University
Garra and tambaqui are endemic fish to Ethiopia and the Amazon. We evaluated the performance, metabolic and functional effects of garra meal as feed on broiler chickens. We evaluated the effect of fish meat preservation methods on nutritive value of tambaqui fish and investigated the compatibility of beet pulp as nutrient on functional and metabolic effects of cultured tambaqui fish.

The shift from traditional to new fish smoking technology in Ghana: Chemical and Microbiological Food Safety Implications, and Recommendations for Meeting Food Security Objectives Ghent University
Ghanian population obtains 60% of animal protein from fish, mainly traditionally smoked fish. Traditional ovens and methods of smoking predispose products to chemical and microbiological hazards, thus compromising safety. A new oven has been introduced to address those safety problems. This study will evaluate the impact of the intervention on the safety of the products from a risk assessment perspective.
Fundamental relations between spatiotemporal fish behaviour and hydraulic conditions in anthropogenically impacted streams Ghent University
In this project, the migration routes and behaviour of two fish species near hydraulic structures in the Albert channel will be investigated by means of rigorous monitoring and modelling. Fundamental knowledge on fish behaviour in relation to hydraulic conditions in these structures will be developed in order to determine the preferred and disturbing conditions to fish migration.
