Fingerprinting of Smoke and Vape Products KU Leuven
This project will focus on three types of products important for the inspection services of the FPS of public health (DG4) i.e. e-liquids, herbal smoking products and tobacco products. For the first type of products, the primary issue is the content of nicotine. Another issue are the label conformity for the nicotine content and the additives, in first instance the presence of caffeine, taurine and vitamin E. Inspectors are requesting mobile ...

Metabolic fingerprinting towards diagnosis and prognosis of cow's milk allergy in children. Ghent University
Given the emerging evidence for the involvement of the gut microbiome in the onset of food allergy
and its resolution, this project will rely on our metabolomics platform and microbial analysis of CMA patients' biofluids, for identifying prognostic biomarkers. Specific bacterial groups involved in the biomarker formation, will be manipulated or administered to mice to aid in biomarker qualification.
Quantitative chemical fingerprinting with coherent Raman microscopy KU Leuven
Microscopy has taken a firm place in many research fields. Coherent Raman scattering (CRS) microscopy offers the unique ability to perform chemically specific imaging with submicrometre resolution; Raman spectroscopy gives reliable molecular information e.g. on the presence of functional groups, molecular organization and interaction. Recent developments of coherent Raman spectroscopy such as coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering and ...

Obtaining fundamental and mechanistic insight into browning reaction pathways in fruit-based food systems: an integrated fingerprinting and kinetics approach. KU Leuven
Consuming fruits is an important part of a healthy life-style. Fruits can be freshly consumed or can be processed into juices, jams and canned fruits. One of the common quality losses during processing and storage of fruit-based products is degradation of the commercially valuable color. Since an attractive color is one of the main characteristics that play an important role in product acceptability, browning is a quality handicap. Color ...
The integration of untargeted fingerprinting and targeted multi-response kinetics for accelerated shelf life testing of shelf-stable foods. KU Leuven
Shelf-stable processed foods can be preserved at room temperature for a very long time (usually more than two years). Conducting a complete shelf-life test over the whole estimated validity of a shelf-stable product is extremely time- and resource-consuming. To overcome this issue, food scientists often conduct accelerated shelf-life tests, typically exposing the product to elevated storage temperatures. For this purpose, an ‘a priori’ ...
Microbial community fingerprinting as a biological indicator for pathogen outgrowth in engineered aquatic systems Ghent University
This project will combine flow cytometry with advanced metagenomics to observe and quantify the response of a receiving microbial community to the invasion of Legionella sp.. Besides identifying characteristic patterns, particular attention will be given towards designing biological metrices which can be applied to predict potential pathogen invasions. The approach will then be validated with a laboratory and full-scale cooling water ...
Flow Cytometric fingerprinting microbial quality Ghent University
Bacteria are ubiquitous on earth and typically form complex microbial communities of coexisting genotypes and phenotypes. These communities are important for our modern society as many different industrial applications are facilitated by bacteria. These applications range from the production of fine chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and food to wastewater treatment, bioremediation, bioaugmentation, and bioleaching. In the future, the importance of ...
