Modulation of cortical excitability in epilepsy Ghent University
This study investigates clinical efficacy and mechanism of action oc continuous Theta Burts Stimulation (cTBS) in epilepsy in a translational design, in an animal model for cortical hyperexcitability and refractory epilepsy patients. We hypothesize that cTBS is an effective anti-epileptic treatment based on demonstrated neuromodulatory effects in preclinical research, decreasing cortical excitability and modulating functional connectivity ...
Cell-based delivery of adenosine in the hippocampus of a mouse model for temporal lobe epilepsy Ghent University
For temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) patients who cannot be treated with the cuurently available treatments, local delivery of adenosine in the epileptic hippocampus might present a solution. Through video-EEG monitoring this project aims to evaluate the anti-epileptic effects of intrahippocampal adenosine delivery by adenosine producing neural stem cells, originating from men or mice, in the intrahippocampal kainic acid mouse model for TLE.
HOME-MATE: HOME-compatible Multimodal Alarm Triggering for Epilepsy Ghent University
This project tackles fundamental research on the technology needed for an automatic epileptic seizure detection system. It uses flexible and stretchable substrates with various sensors, it processes EEG signals and other measurement and it uses the reservoir computing neural network technique. Thsi leads to a fast detection system, tailored to individual patients and fit for a home detection system.

Development of novel compounds for the treatment of drug-resistant epilepsy KU Leuven
Epilepsy is a neurological condition affecting over 65 million people worldwide. 30% of the patients do not respond to the drugs currently available on the market (about 25). In an ongoing collaboration we recently helped identifying plant extracts as potential anti-epileptic drugs. Based on the structure of one of the constituents, a set of analogues was synthesized that showed interesting activity. In this project we intend to further ...
Multimodal Medical Imaging for the localization of epileptic seizures in patients with refractory epilepsy Ghent University
Prevalence of epilepsy and its potential association with Onchocerca volvulus and Mansonella perstans infection in the Adansi South District of Ghana: A pilot study. University of Antwerp
Multimodal image-guided transcranial magnetic stimulation in the delineation of eloquent cerebral cortex in the neurosurgical patient and the treatment of refractory focal epilepsy KU Leuven
Introduction
The goal of this project was to clinically validate motor and language functional mapping with transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and to treat refractory focal epilepsy with multimodal image-guided repetitive TMS (rTMS).
Each year, more than 65,000 people are diagnosed with cancer in Belgium. Of those, 10-25% will experience brain metastasis at some point in the disease course. Part of those brain ...
Discovery of Antiseizure Compounds in Zebrafish Models for the Treatment of Drug-Resistant Epilepsy KU Leuven
With 70 million people affected worldwide is epilepsy one of the most common neurological diseases characterized by unpredictable, unprovoked, recurrent seizures. Moreover, the disease is often accompanied by psychiatric and cognitive comorbidities, affecting dramatically the quality of life of patients. So far, pharmacological intervention is the first-line treatment for epilepsy. Unfortunately, about 30% of patients experience seizures that ...
