Using serology to investigate the epidemiology and impact of Ascaris infections in humans Ghent University
Infections with gastrointestinal worms, including the roundworm Ascaris lumbricoides, occur
throughout the developing world and remain a major public health problem in the poorest
communities with lack of personal hygiene, environmental sanitation and safe drinking water.
Children are at highest risk of these worm infections, which lead to nutritional deficiencies,
anaemia and impaired physical and mental development. ...

Epidemiology of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) exacerbations Ghent University
Acute exacerbations of COPD are a main cause of morbidity and mortality, and the biggest source of economic cost in patients with COPD. COPD exacerbations are very heterogeneous in severity, frequency and clinical presentation. This project aims to unravel clinical and genetic determinants for this heterogeneity in order to improve treatment of patients with COPD.

Epidemiologic study of risk factors for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) Ghent University
The aim of this coordinated, multidisciplinary epidemiologic research is to identify novel COPD susceptibility genes and to elucidate the role of the systemic inflammation in the pathogenesis of COPD. Within a large prospective population-based cohort, the role of systemic inflammation will be investigated in the pathogenesis of COPD as well as in the extrathoracic consequences / comorbidities of COPD.
