Development of a generic screening platform for metabolic engineering applied to the selection of an optimal sialic acid producer Ghent University
Spurred by environmental motives and the limited supply of fossil fuels, chemical industry increasingly relies on microbial engineering to create economically feasible production processes from renewable sources. Several successful metabolic engineering efforts were driven by enabling technologies from synthetic biology, which allow the development of new microbial cell factories for the production of a molecule of interest. One such ...
Manufacturing of bone forming tissue engineering constructs using anintegrated 3D bioreactor-driven process. KU Leuven
Tissue engineering has been defined as an interdisciplinary field which aims at developing implants to induce or support the regeneration of tissues and organs in compromised defect environments. Despite significant scientific advances no large scale clinical translation of current concepts has taken place yet. As numerous scientific questions remain unanswered on for example mechanism of action, the current focus of the field is ...
Biosensors and high-throughput engineering for the production of secondary plant metabolites with flavones as proof-of-concept product class in E.coli Ghent University
Synthetic biology and metabolic engineering are becoming increasingly vital to sustain as well as revolutionise our current ways of life regarding fossil fuel dependency, deteriorating biodiversity, environmental pollution, human and animal health and space exploration.
These biological engineering disciplines are propelled by the fast and efficient DNA readand-write technologies which are used to, e.g., generate immense libraries of ...
PDP4E is an innovation action that will provide software and system engineers with methods and software tools to systematically apply data protection principles in the projects they carry out, so that the products they create comply with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), thus bringing the principles of Privacy and Data Protection by Design to practice.
PDP4E will integrate privacy and data protection engineering ...
Metabolic and Enzyme Engineering for the Biotechnological Production of Partially Acetylated Chitosans Ghent University
The ChitoBioEngineering project aims at establishing, through genetic, metabolic and enzyme engineering, biotechnological ways of producing fully defined, partially acetylated chitosans. TodayU+2019s commercially available chitosans are produced chemically from chitin isolated from shrimp shell wastes. They can be well defined concerning their degree of polymerisation and degree of acetylation, but they are invariably characterised by a ...
: Metabolic engineering for the creation of a platform organism with an increased nucleotide sugar pool. Ghent University
The goal of this research is to create a platform organism with an increased intracellular pool of UDP-sugars. The developed technology is based on the principles of metabolic engineering of the model organism Escherichia coli. The created mutants will function as glycosylation platforms for the production of various oligosaccharides and glycoconjugates.
Epimerases as new tools for the production of rare sugars: a powerful integration of enzyme engineering and systems biocatalysis Ghent University
In this project we aim to develop new pathways for the biocatalytic synthesis of rare sugars and derivatives. To that end, various enzymes will be optimized by protein engineering and then combined in a one-pot reaction vessel. The process starts from sucrose as abundant and renewable resource and allows obtaining the target products with high yields and minimal costs.
Looking back into the future: ancestral reconstruction as a strategy for enzyme engineering Ghent University
Recent studies have shown that present-day enzymes often do not display enough plasticity to allow significant engineering of their substrate preference. Therefore, one of their progenitors will be used here as starting point for the creation of new specificities. Such an ancestral sequence should behave like a pluripotent stem cell that is able to adopt a variety of specialized functions.
