Refining the scope of application of EU fundamental rights in light of the diversification of EU law sources KU Leuven
The European Union protects fundamental rights through a variety of sources, including the Charter of fundamental rights and the general principles of Union law enshrined by the Court of Justice. However, unlike other national or international legal systems, EU fundamental rights do not bind the Member States in all situations. A link to EU law must be demonstrated in order to be able to invoke these rights before the Court of Justice of the ...
The more it changes, the more it stays the same: can phenotypic plasticity of the host counter parasite diversification? Hasselt University
Evolution and diversification of East African sweet potato crop wild relatives, Ipomoea L. (Convolvulaceae). Ghent University
In Kenya, persistent drought and population increase drive up food demands, threatening food security. Advanced genomic techniques will be used to investigate the evolution and diversification of sweet potato wild relatives, with focused sampling of the understudied Eastern African species; thus, providing analytical tools for biodiversity conservation, and food security strategies in the face of climate change for the region.
Challenging the European Monoculture: Towards a Policy on the Diversification of the European Literary Field. KU Leuven
Ecological diversification, recent evolution and speciation of Amphipoda in the polar regions: the case study of Eusirus genus. Hasselt University
Cell type diversification and circuit integration in the hatchling octopus brain KU Leuven
Cephalopods, such as octopus, squid and cuttlefish, are mollusks. Unlike other mollusks, which have fairly simple nervous systems, cephalopods evolved large and centralized nervous systems. The nervous system of the octopus has a similar number of nerve cells as a small primate and its anatomical complexity parallels vertebrate brains. How octopuses have evolved such a large and complex brain independently is not yet known. Moreover, the ...
Genomic correlates of cyto-morphological diversification in green seaweeds (Ulvophyceae) Ghent University
Ulva, an ubiquitous representative of green seaweeds, is emerging as a good model system to study the morphogenesis in macroalgae. This project aims characterize the genome of Ulva, including annotation and comparison of two different Ulva ecotype(wild type and slender). Meanwhile, the two strains will be crossed and a genetic map will be made to facilitate marker discovery.
Patterns and processes of diversification in endemic clades of freshwater mollusks from the East African Rift Ghent University
I aim to integrate modern evolutionary theory and paleontological perspectives to better understand patterns and processes of organismal diversification, and how long-term biosphere-geosphere interactions affect species diversity. I will examine patterns and rates of evolution in a well-controlled fossil gastropod time-series from Lake Malawi. Using comparative data I will investigate how divergence in trophic and reproductive morphological ...
