Duty and Diligence in Disasters: civil servants and the climate change crisis in Malawi KU Leuven
This research project focuses on the aspirations, motivations and obligations of Malawian civil servants, exploring how they understand and perform their duties in contexts of disaster. Malawi is an aid-dependent and disaster-prone country in southern Africa, among the worst affected by the climate change crisis: floods and droughts have become near-seasonal occurrences, negatively impacting on food security, development and wellbeing. As ...
Calculation of casualty risks during and after disasters: definition of a methodology which incorporates variable spatio-temporal elements Ghent University
Casualty risks during and after disasters (such as floods, earthquakes etc.) have received scant attention up to now. In this research, a calculation method will be presented which incorporates not only disaster related factors, but also spatio-temporal elements. The methodology will offer the possibility to compare multiple scenarios, in order to determine a strategy which minimizes the casualty risk for a given disaster.
The role of spatial memory in urban reconstruction planning after disaster. The Ypres case. KU Leuven
In urban reconstruction planning after a disaster, the pressure on the recovery of space, discourse and organisations brings forward a monomaniac strategy often based on the four-staged recovery model (emergency – restoration – reconstruction – commemoration). Destroyed cities are confronted with a new function: they become a memory landscape, translated by many memorials, monuments and cemeteries. In this way, ...

Facilitating the Reverse Triage Selection process in times of disaster and crowding KU Leuven
Mass casualty incidents (MCIs) such as terrorist attacks (e.g. Brussels, March 22, 2016) or the present CoViD-19 pandemic, can no longer be ignored in today’s society. They lead to unexpected and sudden increases in patient volume at hospitals. This major influx can easily overwhelm an emergency department (ED) and even the entire hospital’s capacity and resources. A healthcare system’s ability to rapidly expand its normal capacity to meet ...
