Scientific basis for the delineation process of protected and strictly protected nature - Pledge 2022 Research Institute for Nature and Forest
By the end of 2022, ANB must submit the so-called 'pledge' to the European Commission. In this pledge, Flanders indicates how we will contribute to the realisation of the European biodiversity objective to have 30% protected nature (of which 1/3rd strictly protected) by 2030.

Benefits of deep learning algorithms for delineation of target volumes in radiotherapy treatment for head and neck cancer. KU Leuven
Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is the seventh most common cause of cancer-related death worldwide and is often treated with radio(chemo)therapy. Precise delineation of target volumes (TVs) is necessary for accurate radiotherapy treatment, however delineation is highly experience and perception dependent and therefore prone to human errors. Inadequate TV delineation is proven to be a main cause of local recurrence. A first step ...
Archaeological evaluation, appreciation and spatial delineation of the disappeared Zwinhavens of 'Hoeke' and 'Monnikkenrede' Ghent University
Developing new guidelines for the delineation of the lymphatic system to optimize radiation therapy planning in the novel prone crawl position for breast cancer treatment Ghent University
By using CT and MRI imaging of Thiel embalmed human bodies we will create a new delineation guideline for lymph node areas in the novel prone crawl position that is used for breast cancer radiation therapy. Anatomical dissection following scannings will ensure additional validation. The new guidelines will enable more accurate radiation therapy planning and reduce radiation-induced side effects.
Delineation of effector-specific representations in motor cortex and their structural/functional connectivity. KU Leuven
In many daily activities such as tying your shoelaces, driving a car or playing a musical instrument, a high degree of collaboration between the hands and fingers is critically important. Although it is well known that a dynamic network of various brain areas, including the corpus callosum (CC), is involved in the control of such bilateral movements, its exact neural organization remains a relatively unknown territory. Therefore, I will ...
Multimodal image-guided transcranial magnetic stimulation in the delineation of eloquent cerebral cortex in the neurosurgical patient and the treatment of refractory focal epilepsy KU Leuven
Introduction
The goal of this project was to clinically validate motor and language functional mapping with transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and to treat refractory focal epilepsy with multimodal image-guided repetitive TMS (rTMS).
Each year, more than 65,000 people are diagnosed with cancer in Belgium. Of those, 10-25% will experience brain metastasis at some point in the disease course. Part of those brain ...
Delineation of areas susceptable for wind erosion in Flanders, Belgium Ghent University
In the European framework directive Soil protection, wind erosion is considered as one of the main threats on soil quality in Europe. To delineate the areas susceptable to wind erosion in Flanders, Belgium, wind erosion is computed at the field level using a modeling approach. Erodibility measurements in the wind tunnel support the computer simulations.
Deliberation in unlikely places: Why deeply divided societies introduce deliberative citizen participation. KU Leuven
Divided societies, characterised by strongly politicised segmentation, are often portrayed as unsuitable for deliberative citizen participation. Due to a perceived inability to engage in consensus- oriented debate, deliberative ideals are considered unrealisable. Yet, the growing interest of political elites in deliberative citizen participation is hardly explored, even though its implementation seems paradoxical from a scientific perspective ...
