Development of a biomimetic cornea combining additive manufacturing and stem cell technologies. University of Antwerp
Quantitative automatic analysis of confocal digital images of the cornea Ghent University
This proposal aims to develop and validate algorithms for image quality improvement, segmentation and extraction of clinically relevant parameters, for automated quantitative analysis of confocal digital images of the cornea. This is done to reduce the analysis time and to avoid subjective errors associated with manual, or a semi-automatically work made by the medical specialist.
Reversible immortalization: towards an unlimited supply of primary human corneal endothelial cells to cure a blinding disease. University of Antwerp
Microscopy as corner stone of the Earth Sciences: study of the building blocks of the Earth with reflected and transmitted light Ghent University
Light microscopy takes a pivotal position in the research procedures in Earth Sciences at the Department of Geology at UGent. It is of high importance since it forms the basic research step prior to the application of more advanced and costly multi-instrumental mineralogical, palaeontological and geochemical analyses. To obtain high-quality analyses, good sample preparation is a prerequisite, which implies the necessary equipment.

Laser-induced nanobubbles for advanced therapies in the eye Ghent University
Ocular diseases affect the quality of life of millions of patients. Despite some improvements, the arsenal of medications to treat severe ocular diseases today remains rather restricted to traditional drugs. Use of modern biotherapeutics, like proteins and nucleic acids, could be a major step forward. However, current ways of administration, such as eye drops and intravitreal injections, are no longer sufficient to deliver these drugs to most ...
