The majority of Laboratory Soete's research and industrial activities rely entirely on a set of modular test rigs for large-scale mechanical testing of components and structures, that are driven by various actuators. To ensure further growth en reinforce the position of the lab, a significant investment in this infrastructure is required. As a result of the planned investment, (1) Laboratory Soete will be able to apply more complex testing ...
Salt marsh and seagrass meadow ecosystems with high ecological and economical values play an important role in dissipating energy from waves and currents. In this research we develop a pioneering 3D numerical and analytical model validated using experiments from the new state-of-the-art wave &
current tank and seawater flume in GreenBridge, to achieve new insights in the waves-currentvegetation interaction.
In the search for renewable energy the possibilities of wave energy are being optimized. Fundamental research - experimental and numerical - is carried out on the hydrodynamical behaviour and structural response of wave energy convertors based on wave overtopping to optimize the overtopping and energy conversion of this type. Several locations (on/offshore), fixed and floating devices will be considered.
Clay liners are widely used to isolate pollutants because of their low hydraulic conductivity to water. However, exposure to polluted liquids and repeated wet and dry cycles can increase their permeability.
This project evaluates the effect of polymer treatment on bentonite during wet-dry cycles. The study is addressed to understand the mechanism of polymer-clay interaction at the nano- and macro-scale.
Designing a Wave Energy Converters (WECs) park layout requires the study of the interaction between the devices of a 'farm' layout (near-field effects) and the influence of wake effects behind a WEC-park (far-field effects). These park effects will be investigated by means of MILDwave, a numerical wave propagation model, which uses a sponge layer technique in order to simulate absorption and radiation of a converter.
Objective is development of a non-linear numerical platform to deal with complex geometries and motions of Marine Renewable Technologies (MRT) under operational and extreme sea-states including mooring lines, PTO system and global control strategy. Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) methods are employed, validated using pioneering experimental data to cover knowledge gaps in MRT to achieve a mature offshore renewable energy sector.
