Damage-sensitive features used in vibration-based structural health monitoring (SHM), such as strains or natural frequencies, are often influenced by operational and environmental conditions, for example temperature. This complicates damage detection. Although several techniques have been proposed in the literature to differentiate between damage and operational and environmental conditions, this remains a challenge. This proposal ...
In this project, the energy absorption behaviour of composite structures is studied under blast loading. Composite tubes are placed in between two fire-resistant glass/IPC face sheets. The skins transfer the shock wave to the tubes that absorb the energy. Both laboratory and full-scale explosion tests will be done.
The majority of Laboratory Soete's research and industrial activities rely entirely on a set of modular test rigs for large-scale mechanical testing of components and structures, that are driven by various actuators. To ensure further growth en reinforce the position of the lab, a significant investment in this infrastructure is required. As a result of the planned investment, (1) Laboratory Soete will be able to apply more complex testing ...
Construction projects commonly struggle with uncertainties and delays, which are frequently caused by a range of factors, including ineffective communication, ambiguous requirements, and design errors. To improve the preliminary stages of the construction process, it is imperative to prioritize clear, robust communication among the key designers, as it serves as a critical driver of project success. Recently, the incorporation and utilization ...
The requested infrastructure, a high-tech saltwater waveflume, is integrated in the multidisciplinary marine andmaritime research facility of Ghent University at OstendScience Park (OSP). It will help to bridge the gap betweensmall-scale, artificial lab studies and complex, multidisciplinary, expensive field studies, bringing the oceaninto the laboratory and engineering sustainable marineecosystems for environmental and human health. ...
Nature-based solutions that provide sustainable coastal protection using low environmental impact solutions are significant in the adaptation process towards global climate change. One opportunity of sustainable protection is offered by aquatic vegetation(seagrass, salt marshes, and mangroves) in the coastal zone, which is of high ecological value and provides natural coastal protection through attenuating waves, baffling currents and ...
Salt marsh and seagrass meadow ecosystems with high ecological and economical values play an important role in dissipating energy from waves and currents. In this research we develop a pioneering 3D numerical and analytical model validated using experiments from the new state-of-the-art wave &
current tank and seawater flume in GreenBridge, to achieve new insights in the waves-currentvegetation interaction.
In order to be able to fulfill the requirements concerning renewable energy, a large amount of energy should be gained from offshore windfarms. Mainly because of energetic reasons, these parks must be placed further and further offshore. Building these parks, a lot of problems occur. This project proposal comprehends on the one hand a desk study to investigate these problems and on the other hand an experimental study towards one specific ...
