Generation and characteristics of procoagulant platelets KU Leuven
Upon activation, a subpopulation of platelets adopts a necrotic procoagulant phenotype, which is characterized by bioenergetic failure of the cell. The molecular events underlying the formation of procoagulant platelets include calcium cytotoxicity and reactive oxygen species; both facilitate the cyclophilin D (CypD)-dependent formation of the mitochondrial permeability transition pore, leading to a decreased mitochondrial membrane potential ...
Illuminating blind spots: Characteristics of multi-rater feedback and its potential for professional development Ghent University
Feedback is valuable to professionals because it signals discrepancies between actual and desired performance. Multi-rater feedback has the advantage that different categories of raters (e.g., subordinates, coworkers, supervisors) introduce unique perspectives. However, interpreting and
organizing multi-rater feedback is complex. The objective of this project is to better understand the properties of multi-rater feedback and its ...
Improving strain characteristics of Zymomonas mobilis for efficient bioethanol production from lignocellulosic biomass by means of experimental evolution KU Leuven
Ethanol is becoming a well-established renewable biofuel. Usage of ethanol as a fuel potentiates both a reduction in fossil fuel dependency and helps mitigating climate change by greenhouse gas savings. Although ethanol demands are continuously increasing, more than 98% of the ethanol on the market still originates from feedstock, such as corn, wheat and sugarcane. On the long term, using food for fuel is not acceptable given the increasing ...

The impact of the physical characteristics of flint and their weathering on the preservation of prehistoric use wear traces Ghent University
The present project aims at analyzing the relationship between the technical properties of flint artefacts from the Scheldt valley and the origin and weathering of their micro wear traces. By characterizing the intrinsic properties, combined with functional experiments as well as weathering experiments, a new 3D registration protocol will follow the evolution of the micro wear traces in relation to the structure of the flint.
Microstructural characteristics of the effect of hydrogen on the deformation mechanisms in TWIP steels Ghent University
Hydrogen is often quoted as future energy carrier as it might offer an alternative for the scarce fossil fuels. Advanced high strength steels, such as TWIP steels, are excellent materials for applications in for example the automotive industry, where weight reduction is essential while dealing with the strict CO2-emissions despite more stringent safety regulations. However, the combination of hydrogen and advanced high strength steels offers ...
Digital game-based learning in formal education: Development and validation of a conceptual model comprising game characteristics, stakeholder variables, school-level factors, socio-cultural influences and learning outcomes Ghent University
Empirical research is growing about both the learning opportunities that can be derived from video games and the effectiveness of digital game-based learning (DGBL) in formal education. However, the resulting evidence is conflicting and inconclusive. A likely explanation is that the underlying theoretical frameworks do not sufficiently address the full complexity of learning with video games in a formal educational context. This post-doctoral ...
