Interactions between river-geomorphology, carbon transport and floodplain carbon sequestration. KU Leuven
Multiscale modeling of carbon deposition: from carbon nanotube whiskers to free radical coke formation Ghent University
In this work, for the first time a first principles based coking model will be developed to describe catalytic and non-catalytic carbon growth valid under typical pyrolysis conditions on transition metal surfaces. This model will be incorporated in a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code to be able to accurately account for three-dimensional flow phenomena and concentration gradients.
Catalysts for Carbon Circularity: Innovative chemistry for upgrading plastic waste (C3) Ghent University
The grand challenge of closing the carbon cycle for large-‐scale produced plastics such as polyolefins is addressed. Rather than being considered waste, these will serve as raw materials to produce novel polymers with superior physical properties and recyclability, and to produce value-‐added, well-‐defined low molecular building blocks. Homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts will be deployed in a concerted fashion to design energy ...
Assessing the controls on long-term preservation of organic carbon in soils: a field study in intertidal landscapes and a model assessment KU Leuven
The soil constitutes only the uppermost meter of our planet, yet it’s vital to life on Earth. From a human perspective, a healthy soil is necessary for people to grow crops and to sustain vegetation which convert CO2 from the atmosphere to the oxygen we all breath. From a natural perspective, soils are an important habitat and have a species richness higher than any other ecosystem, with a gram of soil containing several thousands of species ...
Testing and demonstrating the implementation of the underlying practices of a carbon farming scheme as a systemic innovation in support of the F2F Strategy KU Leuven
FarmCarbon aims to validate, demonstrate and implement a result-based carbon farming scheme that aims to increase farm-based carbon sequestration and storage in soils in order to achieve healthy soils and climate neutral farming by reducing GHG emissions.
Achieving this objective requires linking results delivered (GHG emissions avoided or CO2 sequestered) as well as payments made to the farmer. First, such a scheme requires a ...
Photocatalytic functionalization of carbon surfaces KU Leuven
The core of this research is the oxidation of graphitic carbon materials by a completely new approach. Oxidation-resistant carbon materials like graphite are oxidized by using photocatalysis. Present-day carbon oxidation methods make use of very high temperatures, polluting chemicals and aggressive oxidants, which impact the environment badly. The photocatalytic oxidation method could potentially provide an alternative to the commonly used ...
