Building on the edge. A socio-cultural approach of rural stone domestic buildings on the north-western edge of the Roman Empire Ghent University
Stone domestic architecture is first encountered in north-western Gaul in the Roman period. The shift from indigenous houses in perishable materials to residences in stone is a major turning point in the history of the region and reveals how native inhabitants were engaging with the Roman cultural sphere. This project investigates an understudied corpus of rural stone dwellings in north-western Gaul, not as so often from an economic point of ...
Multi-level Characterisation of the Building Energy Performance of Residential Buildings based on Analysis of Measurement Data. KU Leuven
In support of the energy transition in the built environment, knowledge on
performance characteristics of the building fabric and technical systems is
essential for various applications, such as quality assurance, the development of
renovation strategies, or the appraisal of the potential for demand side flexibility.
In practice, the available information on the existing building stock is often
limited and of poor ...
Hybrid vibro-acoustic analysis of buildings and building components involving model updating. KU Leuven
Research on fungal growth, mycotoxin production and production of volatile fungal metabolites in buildings to prevent the sick building syndrome Ghent University
In this project an LC-MS method will be develop for the quantitative determination of mycotoxins in mould cultures and a GC-MS method for the semi-quantitative determiantion of fungal volatiles. Moulds present in buildings will be analysed on their mycotoxin and volatile metabolites production. Measures to prevent growth, mycotoxin production and production of fungal volatiles will be proposed.
Next generation building energy assessment methods towards a carbon neutral building stock KU Leuven
The development of future-proof assessment methods for the energy performance of buildings supporting the transition to low-carbon housing, taking into account the technical social-economic impact at the level of the individual building, the local network and the building stock.
Building performance characterisation and assessment based on in-situ measurements KU Leuven
Decreasing the energy use in buildings can only be achieved by an accurate characterisation of the as-built energy performance of buildings. This is mainly for two reasons. First of all, despite the ever more stringent energy legislation for new and renovated buildings, monitoring the actual energy performances often reveals a significant performance gap with the theoretically designed targets. Characterisation by monitoring hence ensures ...
Repurposing our built environment: Circular design qualities for reconverting office buildings to affordable housing Vrije Universiteit Brussel
Performance assessment of resilient personalized environmental control systems (r-PECS) in non-residential buildings KU Leuven
In most multi-occupied spaces in non-residential buildings, total volume (TV) ventilation units are installed to ventilate and/or condition the entire space without considering individual preferences of indoor environmental quality. This leads to occupant dissatisfaction and compromises their wellbeing. With fast build-up of contaminants in air-tight envelopes, increasing ventilation rates increases energy costs without necessarily improving ...
Advanced performance assessment of existing concrete buildings by coupling 3D analysis of load arrangement, structure analysis including membrane action and test-based model updating KU Leuven
To meet climate objectives there is a clear need to deal differently with our building patrimony. In the future, buildings structures must be re-used possibly in combination with changes of their intended function. This research work will develop an assessment procedure for existing structures. After collecting the necessary historical data, the procedure focuses on the modelling of load arrangements through linear FEA. Despite being the ...
