A discrete multiscale biophysical model of cardiac tissue and its application to study cardiac arrhythmias due to tissue anisotropy. Ghent University
Cardiac arrhythmias is a major cause of death in the industrialised world. They occur due to abnormal wave propagation. The most important factor affecting wave propagation is anisotropy of cardiac tissue. We will perform a combined in silico (at UGent) and experimental (at MIPT) study to reveal underlying biophysical mechanisms of the anisotropy and its effects on onset of arrhythmias.
New methodology for the calculation of local magnetic anisotropy effects in large polynuclear complexes of biological interest and single-molecule magnets: developments, implementation and application. KU Leuven
Ph.D. position: Neighbouring grain effects in metals with strong anisotropy KU Leuven
The fundamental definition of stress is the force per unit area applied to the material. The practical implementation of this definition entails a scale dependence, since the area onto which the load is applied is considered. When a load is exerted on a metallic material the global macroscopic stress can be significantly different from the local microscopic stress, for example in a single grain. For metallic materials with strong anisotropy, ...
High Speed MRAM with Voltage Control of Magnetic Anisotropy (VCMA) Effect KU Leuven
Magnetic random access memory (MRAM) is gaining intensive interest for embedded and stand-alone memory applications. Its inherent non-volatility is believed to address the large stand-by energy consumption issues in the present memory hierarchy. In recent years, the spin-transfer torque (STT)-MRAM has gradually matured and started to appear in the market. Typically, STT writing of perpendicular magnetic tunnel junction (pMTJ) is limited to a ...
Blending anisotropy control and metastability engineering: Microstructural design of metallic materials for improved functionality KU Leuven
The proposed research program targets the development of novel metallic materials with improved functionality with specific focus on tailoring thermal expansion via martensitic phases.
The successful design of novel alloy microstructures for advanced engineering applications stands and falls with proper regulation of metastabilities and anisotropies. Taking full control of both aspects will enable new alloys with bespoke properties and ...
Multiscale modelling of plastic anisotropy of automotive steels KU Leuven
The proposed project contributes to the development of a multiscale modelling platform for advanced metal forming simulations. For that purpose, suitable parametric representations of the (dual phase) microstructures will be searched and corresponding virtual, microstructure-based RVE generators will be built. The scientific core of the project will be the extension of single phase polycrystal plasticity models available at KU Leuven to dual ...
Single-Sided Ultrasonic Characterization of (Damaged) Composites having Mechanical and/or Geometrical Anisotropy Ghent University
The current and next generation composites are designed by combining high strength fibers with a low density matrix (i.e. low weight), in view of exploiting the advantageous of both. The application of these composites in primary components has changed several industries, including aerospace. The reverse side of the medal is their more involved mechanical nature (complex internal reinforcement architecture, layered media ...) as well as their ...
Influence of mechanical properties including heterogeneity and anisotropy on crack driving force of pipeline girth weld flaws. Ghent University
The strain capacity of flawed pipeline girth welds is influenced by the strength properties of the involved materials. Heterogeneity and anisotropy of weld and pipe are not adequately covered by current assessment procedures and will be investigated in this research. Their effects will be explored using previously developed numerical and experimental tools which will be extended for this specific purpose.
