Animal and Human Health Engineering (A2H) KU Leuven
The Division Animal and Human Health Engineering (A2H) is a new division within the Department of Biosystems at KU Leuven consisting of a transdisciplinary team of researchers who are active in the field of animal and human health engineering.
The mission of A2H is stated as follows:
- Perform cutting edge research for improving health, welfare and productivity of individual living organisms (animals and humans) ...
Functional animal nutrition Research Institute for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food
There are three main research objectives. In the first place, research in nutrition physiology should fine-tune the supply of nutrients with the requirements of the animal. In close relation with the latter, efforts are done to reduce the excretion of minerals into the environment. Functional animal nutrition sensu stricto aims to improve not only animal health but also to increase the health value of animal products for the consumer.
Animal Sciences Research Institute for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food
The Animal Sciences Unit works on land and at sea. Our research furthers more sustainable animal husbandry, including animal welfare and delivery of high-quality, safe animal products. We also strive for more sustainable exploitation and protection of marine resources/environment. We study fish populations, fisheries techniques, aquaculture and the effect of human activities on the marine ecosystem.

Small Animal Husbandry Research Institute for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food
In this research, we strive for economically, ecologically and socially sustainable chicken, rabbit and egg production. We evaluate feed and additives during production and perform digestibility and balance trials and physiological research. We try to reduce emissions and excretions (N, P). We work to improve animal welfare and health. We have several hundred experimental units for housing broilers, laying hens, turkeys and rabbits.
Animal Husbandry Research Institute for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food
In this applied scientific research, ILVO focuses on sustainable cattle, pig, poultry and rabbit husbandry. Our first focus is nutritional physiology research to match the nutrient supply as closely as possible to the animal’s needs. Closely related research studies how to minimise the excretion of nutrients into the environment. Our functional nutrition research focuses not only on improving the health of the animal, but also strives to ...
Animal Husbandry and Welfare Research Institute for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food
Diverse aspects of cattle, pig and poultry husbandry are studied, rather in the perspective of a system. To increase social acceptability of livestock production, research focuses on the development of methods and strategies to evaluate and improve animal welfare.
