Accessibility of substance abuse treatment for persons with a migration background: A qualitative analysis of five treatment centers and problem users with a migration background in Flanders, Belgium Ghent University
We examine social mechanisms and factors linking the cumulative effect of socio-economic disadvantage and substance abuse service disparities for users with a migration background. We study the following hypothesis: "disparities in substance abuse services arise when disadvantages in the health care system interact with those in the community system" (Alegria, 2011: 377) in a cross-case analysis of five treatment facilities.
Defence lawyers in the defence. Lawyers' culpable involvement in crime: criminality, criminal investigations and safeguards against abuse KU Leuven
They already popped up in just about every mafia fiction: the lawyers who are so close to the members of criminal organisations that the question arises whether they themselves do not commit criminal acts. During the past few years, however, Belgian and Dutch reality also saw several high-profile criminal proceedings against lawyers who allegedly abused their professional position at the behest or at least in the interest of criminal ...

This research aims at analyzing and evaluating this practice and its consequences, through a comparative analysis of the limitation of freedom of expression at international level, complemented by case studies of four democratic states.
The substantive and procedural relationship between administrative sanctions and criminal penalties for market abuse KU Leuven
Financial crimes aim at large illegal financial gains and are often of a complex nature. This is particularly the case for offences related to the functioning of financial markets such as insider dealing and market manipulation. The legislation provides for a classical criminal procedure to deal with these crimes, but also allows for an administrative sanctioning procedure. In the former case, the actors of the criminal law come into play. In ...
Abuse of exclusion and withdrawal remedies in private companies KU Leuven
Shares in a company are often the most valuable asset of a shareholder. It is, however, difficult to convert the value of shares into money in order to protect the value of the company (going-concern value). Moreover, most non-listed companies have legal impediments to the transfer of shares. Combined with the lack of an economic market for these shares, these impediments disable a transfer of shares.
This leads to problematic ...

Abusive practices by online platforms: the position of suppliers under European law KU Leuven
Online platforms play an increasingly important role in today’s economy by serving as intermediaries between consumers and suppliers. App stores, for example, connect consumers with app developers. As platforms integrate vertically, e.g. by producing and distributing their own apps, they may have an incentive to exclude the competing products of independent suppliers. Given their crucial intermediary, they often have the ability to do so. In ...
