Sustainable vegetable production in South East Asia Ghent University
The aim of this symposium is to bring together knowledge on sustainable techniques of vegetable production, with emphasis on South East Asia. The emphasis of the symposium is on nutrient supply, fertilization, organic matter management and soil quality, but also other aspects of sustainable vegetable production including crop protection can be dealt with. Apart from oral and poster presentations on these topics, there will be dedicated ...
How do aerosol-cloud interactions influence the surface mass balance in East Antartica (CLIMB). KU Leuven
The water cycle, cloud microphysics and cloud-aerosol-interactions are recognized as key elements of the Antarctic climate system by several international consortia, such as the Joint Programming Initiative Connecting Climate Change Knowledge for Europe (JPI Climate) or the International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Clouds and aerosols play a significant role in the radiative energy budget and aerosols impact cloud microphysics because ...
PAMEXEA: Climate Extremes in East Africa: Causes of variation in space and time Ghent University
PAMEXEA
The catastrophic droughts which affected Kenya, Ethipia and Somalia in recent years once more highlighted the heavy impact of a variable climate on the vulnerable populations and socio-economic systems of (semi-)arid East Africa, and the enormous challenge to develop a sustainable agricultural economy in a future of climate change, growing demographic pressure and naturally scarce land and water resources. ...

Microbiome diversity and function in the Sør Rondane Mountains, East Antarctica - MICROBIAN Ghent University
The scarce ice-free areas in inland East-Antarctica, such as the Sør Rondane Mountains (SRM), are among the most extreme terrestrial environments on Earth. Here, life is dominated by microbes in strongly truncated foodwebs. Elucidating the factors that shape the biodiversity and the biogeochemical processes of these microbiomes provides the scientific basis for habitat mapping and classification, developing conservation strategies, guiding ...
MICROBIAN: Diversity and function of microbials in the Sor Rondane Mountains, East Antarctica Ghent University
The SØr Rondane Mountains (SRM) represent a c. 900 km2 large nunatak, encompassing a large range of terrestrial habitats differing in geology and soil characteristics, exposure time and microclimatic conditions. The objectives of the project are to (i) use a combination of remote sensing and close-range field observation techniques to map physical habitat characteristics and the presence/extent of microbial mat and biological crust ...
East African Great Lake Ecosystem Sensitivity to changes (EAGLES). KU Leuven
East African Great Lake Ecosystem Sensitivity to changes (EAGLES). KU Leuven
EAGLES: East African Great Lake Ecosystem Sensitivity to changes Ghent University
EAGLES is aimed at understanding, monitoring and forecasting how the ecosystem of Lake Kivu responds to human-induced changes in order to predict the effects of ongoing and planned exploitation of its resources under different scenarios of climate change. We will combine data mining, remote sensing, moorings, field and laboratory experiments, numerical modeling and proxies in lake sediment cores.
