Ultrasound assisted crystallisation in microreactors KU Leuven
This research project studied the use of ultrasound in cooling crystallization as an alternative seeding and particle engineering technique. To accomplish this goal, the fundamentals of the cavitation phenomena were first studied to identify the operating conditions suitable for crystallization. Next, the implementation, operation and settings of the ultrasonic field during cooling crystallization were optimized. Finally, possible reactor ...
Investigating the neuromodulatory effect of focused ultrasound in the human brain. Ghent University
Brain disorders affect one in four people and treatment is often ineffective or invasive. It is an aspiration of medicine and neuroscience to non-invasively modulate any given region of the brain with high precision. Ultrasonic waves can be safely focused through the human skull and are able to modulate neuronal activity at millimeter resolution. The currently available ultrasonic
neuromodulation protocols for human applications have ...

DECIBUS - DEmonstration of Communication In the Body by UltraSound KU Leuven
Exploring the un(der)explored: direct quantitative imaging of the functional properties of the abdominal aorta with ultrasound Ghent University
We will assess the feasibility of imaging techniques for the abdominal aorta providing quantitative information on aortic tissue properties using ultrasonic echography. Two methods, pulse wave imaging and supersonic shear wave imaging, will be explored. Using multiphysics simulations, we will address questions regarding both the imaging physics and the physical properties to be quantified. Simulation results will be validated in-vitro.
Ultrasound Application for Enhanced Viscous Streams Processing and Polyurethanes Production KU Leuven
Processing of high viscosity streams in general, including polymer synthesis and handling in particular, represents a pivotal and rather challenging aspect of the chemical industry. In this context, the production and handling of plastics is a fundamental industry for the European Union, with millions of people being employed in this sector. Strategies are being implemented towards more sustainable materials and energy resources for the ...
Functional, dynamic assessment of the knee ligaments based on ultrasound imaging using a novel flexible matrix array transducer. KU Leuven
Towards more accurate diagnostics in healthcare: AI applied to super-resolution ultrasound imaging KU Leuven
Ultrasound imaging is widely used in clinical settings as it is inexpensive, portable, real-time, and does not involve ionizing radiation. However, the quality of ultrasound images is often poor, leading to low diagnosis capabilities. The aim of this project is to leverage the potential of artificial intelligence, specifically of deep learning, to improve the quality of ultrasound images, in particular through the use of super-resolution ...
Improved non-invasive diagnostics of arterial disease through integrated simulation of medical ultrasound, arterial blood flow and aretrial wall mechanics Ghent University
Aim is to develop an advanced simulation tool for cardiovascular ultrasound applications, based on computer simulations of blood flow and arterial mechanics (expertise Ugent). As Ugent lacks fundamental knowledge on medical ultrasound, we will collaborate with NTNU, Trondheim. This bilateral project will specifically allow us to couple wall mechanics (Abaqus) and ultrasound (Field) and develop advanced ultrasound applications (a.o. 3D).
