Unum et Unum Sunt Unum? The Characterisation of the Translation Technique and Theology of LXX Proverbs and Its Relation to LXX Job KU Leuven
In recent scholarly debate, attention has been paid to the characterisation of the individual translators of the different books of the Septuagint (LXX) and the translation techniques they applied to translate their Hebrew Vorlage. Indeed, it is commonly accepted that all books are translated respectively by different translators. However, there is one considerable exception with regard to the question whether LXX Job and Proverbs ...
Bible, Emperor, Jew. The interplay of biblical exegesis and anti-Judaism in imperial propaganda under Macedonian rule KU Leuven
This project will investigate the ideological outreach and function of Byzantine literature and the interplay between biblical exegesis and anti-Jewish politics in a crucial period of Byzantine history. (a) A post-doc researcher will document, interpret and explain the role of biblical exegesis in the process of justifying anti-Jewish measures that were undertaken not out of religious but out of ideological reasons by emperors of the ...
Where 'The Translator' meets Translation Studies: Towards an Innovative Characterization of Jerome's Translation Technique in his Latin Psalter Translations KU Leuven
No translation had more impact on the history of ideas and culture than the Latin 'Vulgate' translation by Jerome (ca. 347-420). Pope Benedict XV called him the 'Doctor Maximus', given by God to the Church for the understanding of the Bible (Sp. Par. 1). This research project intends to systematically characterize Jerome’s translation technique by adopting and adapting an innovative method which is developed in modern Translation Studies and ...
A Historical-Contextual Study of the Views on Language in the Gospel of John: παροιμία and παρρησία as Key Concepts for Interpreting the Language of the Johannine Jesus KU Leuven
John’s figurative world seems confused and incoherent. Jesus is presented as the lamb (Jn 1,29), the shepherd of the sheep (10,1-16), and even as the door of the sheep pen through which that same shepherd enters and leads the sheep out to the pasture (10,1-9), etc. This imagery resists formal classification and comprehensive description. No single theory has managed to explain the origin, the literary form and treatment, or the theological ...
Biblical Exegesis in Byzantium KU Leuven
The research program I propose is to carry out a systematic study of all important and characteristic features of Byzantine exegesis. The development of exegesis in the Latin West has been recorded and studied but for Byzantium such research is completely lacking. I wish to further map out and open up the corpus of Byzantine exegetical literature and to examine its sources, methods, development and role in Byzantine society. In the end this ...
Psalter Exegesis in the 'Macedonian Renaissance': the Catena of Paris. gr. 139. KU Leuven
An unconventional Catena on the Psalms. A Partial Edition of the Type III Catena and an Assessment of its Position in the Exegetical Tradition KU Leuven
There are many catenae on the Psalms, but one of the finest and most important is the one that can be found in the so-called ‘Paris Psalter’ (Par. gr. 139 = Rahlfs 1133). It is a tenth-century manuscript that was probably composed for emperor Constantine VII Porphyrogenitus and contains not only fabulous miniatures, but also a catena commentary on the Psalms.
In the beginning of the 20th century, the Psalter catenae have been ...
