The synthesis and application of novel activity-based probes for the visualization of cysteine proteases. KU Leuven
Proteases are enzymes that cut proteins by catalyzing the hydrolysis of the peptide bond. They can be found in almost every organism, where they play a part in many biological pathways and are involved in various human diseases. For example, cathepsins, a class of cysteine proteases, are upregulated in various cancers, making them an interesting biomarker and suitable targets for tumor labeling.

Synthesis and eva luation o f new inhibitors of penicillin-binding proteins from resistant bacteria en route to new antibacterial agents Ghent University
The development of resistance to antibiotics can interfere with, or even prevent, the treatment of bacterial infections, especially in hospitals. This project intends to discover new inhibitors of the penicillin-binding proteins from resistant bacterial strains. Strategies for inhibitor discovery will involve computational techniques, chemical synthesis and structural, biochemical, antimicrobial and toxicological evaluations.
Synthesis of phosphonylated azadienes as building blocks for azaheterocyclic phosphonates Ghent University
The aim of this project is the synthesis of innovative phosphonylated azadienes, i.e. 4-phosphono-2-aza-1,3-dienes, as precursors for phosphonylated azaheterocyclic three-, four-, five- and six-membered rings. The reactivity of these 4-phosphono-2-aza-1,3-dienes will be studied in depth using carbenes and different types of nucleophiles. Further, a direct synthesis of 3-pyridylphosphonates is envisaged.

Aziridine-based CO2 capture – a new approach toward the synthesis of fluorinated oxazolidinones. Ghent University
The levels of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide surged to their highest level in 800,000 years.
Consequently, research to covert CO2 into chemical building blocks deserves high priority. This
project will investigate the eligibility of fluorinated aziridines for CO2 capture to conveniently produce
fluorinated cyclic carbamates as new nitrogen building blocks for diverse applications (antibiotics,…).
Synthesis of triazole analogues of Peloruside A via “click”-chemistry as potential antitumor compounds. Ghent University
The aim of this project is the synthesis of simplified analogues of Peloruside A. This should lead to a better understanding of the way of action and of which pharmacophoric groups are responsible for its antitumor activity. This should also result in analogues which are synthetically more easily accessible.
