Microbiological safety cabinets are indispensable for the study of bacterial and mycotic infections in animals. This application describes the replacement of the current, outdated cabinets to keep compliant with safety regulations concerning infectious agents. This infrastructure is essential for the daily research activities within the department, and that in collaboration with other partners (within and outside UGent).

pathogen by humans results in gastroenteritis and is linked to contaminated eggs and egg

Shrimp and flatfish can be caught by electric pulses in a more selective and ecological manner in comparison to the traditional beam trawling. The purpose of this project is to determine the safety ranges of electric pulses for marine organisms as well as the development of a pulse for catching sole.

The in vitro models concern cytotoxicity and permeability studies using intestinal cell cultures and intestinal explants. The in vivo modelling is mainly based on toxicokinetical studies in pigs and poultry. Both efficacy, mycotoxin binding or biotransforming ability, and safety, interaction with drug absorption, is of interest.

Objectives
1) What is the relation between the rearing conditions and the microbial and chemical safety of the insects?
2) Which substrates can be used for safe, large-scale insect growing and what are the requirements that have to be met?
3) What are good practices for the rearer to produce a safe supply of insects?
