Microbiological safety cabinets: key equipment for veterinary microbiology research Ghent University
Microbiological safety cabinets are indispensable for the study of bacterial and mycotic infections in animals. This application describes the replacement of the current, outdated cabinets to keep compliant with safety regulations concerning infectious agents. This infrastructure is essential for the daily research activities within the department, and that in collaboration with other partners (within and outside UGent).
Optimalisation of pharmacotherapy and patient safety by development of advanced clinical decision support systems in hospital and first line setting KU Leuven
In 1999, the US Institute of Medicine released a report titled “To Err is Human: building a Safer Health System”, which addressed the potential impact of medical errors on health care and patient morbidity and mortality. According to this report, in 1993 alone, about 7000 deaths in the US could be directly attributed to medication errors. As a result of these unsettling findings, during the last two decades, much effort has been put into ...

Enhancing the quality and safety of pharmacotherapy in old age Ghent University
OLD AGE PHARMACOTHERAPY Enhancing the quality and safety of pharmacotherapy in old age ESF European Science Foundation Ref EW13-002 (MED) Prof. Robert Vander Stichele
Managing care for patients with chronic conditions (usually old patients with polypharmacy)currently represents
one of the greatest challenges to healthcare systems. The value of the proposal is high due to the fact that it
represents an approximation to ...
Guarantee the safety of live Salmonella vaccines by introducing deletions in genes crucial for egg contamination Ghent University
Salmonella enterica subspecies enterica serovar Enteritidis is a pandemic pathogen, present in
countries with industrial poultry production since the 1990s. Ingestion of this foodborne
pathogen by humans results in gastroenteritis and is linked to contaminated eggs and egg
products. Salmonellosis caused by Salmonella Enteritidis in chickens however does not lead to
clinical symptoms but causes enormous economic losses. ...
Pulse Fisheries: determining the safety margins for marine organisms and the optimal pulse for catching sole (Solea solea) Ghent University
Shrimp and flatfish can be caught by electric pulses in a more selective and ecological manner in comparison to the traditional beam trawling. The purpose of this project is to determine the safety ranges of electric pulses for marine organisms as well as the development of a pulse for catching sole.
Development of in vitro and in vivo models for efficacy and safety testing of mycotoxin detoxifying agents Ghent University
The in vitro models concern cytotoxicity and permeability studies using intestinal cell cultures and intestinal explants. The in vivo modelling is mainly based on toxicokinetical studies in pigs and poultry. Both efficacy, mycotoxin binding or biotransforming ability, and safety, interaction with drug absorption, is of interest.
EDINCO 2: Microbiological and chemical food safety risks in the breeding of insects Ghent University
Objectives
1) What is the relation between the rearing conditions and the microbial and chemical safety of the insects?
2) Which substrates can be used for safe, large-scale insect growing and what are the requirements that have to be met?
3) What are good practices for the rearer to produce a safe supply of insects?
Evaluation of the potential and safety of using Staphylococcus lytic phages to combat MRSA colonization and treatment of S. aureus skin infections in farm animals Ghent University
In this project new lytic phages against S. aureus and S. aureus MRSA strains that are relevant to be isolated farm animals. New insulation is done with a view to the application of a larger collection of lytic phages strictly to the use in a faagcocktail increases, which may be appropriate in order to prevent resistance with respect to phage infection. A wide / diverse host range (including MRSA clone ST 398), clear plaques (strictly ...
