DEEP REST : Conservation & restoration of deep-sea ecosystems in the context of deep-sea mining Ghent University
DEEP REST will investigate two remarkable deep-sea ecosystems namely polymetallic nodule fields and hydrothermal vents, including their extended peripheries. Four major areas will be investigated: the Clarion-Clipperton Zone (CCZ) and the DISCOL Experimental Area (DEA) in the Pacific Ocean for nodule fields and the northern Mid-Atlantic Ridge (nMAR), and the Arctic Mid-Ocean Ridge (AMOR) for active and inactive hydrothermal vents. These ...

Supportive study for a new sector: How native oyster aquaculture and restoration can enhance each other Ghent University
Aquaculture of the native European oyster in the Belgian North Sea, will not only support a new economic activity but will also help planned restoration efforts through systematical provision of the restoration zones with oyster seed. The European oyster is almost extinct and for these restoration efforts to be successful, recruitment should be safeguarded year after year. This can be achieved through aquaculture practices. On the long run, ...

Identifying hotspots of soil erosion and propose targeted catchment restoration using an evidence-based approach (Lake Tana Basin, Ethiopia) Ghent University
Soil erosion is a serious problem for economy and environment in the Lake Tana Basin U+2013 a global hotspot for soil erosion. Through the innovative method of sediment fingerprinting and hydrological modelling, Tirusew will identify erosion hotspots, enabling an improved and evidence-based catchment restoration. In doing so, she will be a pioneer at her university, and in Africa.

Interactive effects of local and landscape scale restoration of semi-natural grasslands and agricultural fields on species interactions and ecosystem functions in different social-ecological systems KU Leuven
This project will investigate species interactions across different trophic levels including (1) plant-soil, (2) plant-pollinator and (3) bird-food resource interactions, in restored and degraded calcareous grasslands that are embedded in different socio-ecological and landscape contexts in three countries (Germany, Spain and Estonia). Additionally, it will measure ecosystem functions including soil functions, pollination and predation. ...
