Buildings of exceptional type: their geometries and their representations. Ghent University
My project is about buildings, abstract geometric objects introduced to get a grip on certain classes of groups. Classical examples are projective and polar spaces. Exceptional examples are buildings of type G2, F4, E6, E7 and E8, widely studied in mathematics and physics.
The above buildings are the spherical buildings; a second important class is given by the affine buildings. Overall, my project contributes to the study of ...

Delineation of effector-specific representations in motor cortex and their structural/functional connectivity. KU Leuven
In many daily activities such as tying your shoelaces, driving a car or playing a musical instrument, a high degree of collaboration between the hands and fingers is critically important. Although it is well known that a dynamic network of various brain areas, including the corpus callosum (CC), is involved in the control of such bilateral movements, its exact neural organization remains a relatively unknown territory. Therefore, I will ...
Relationship between representations of scenes, whole objects and their constituent parts in the human cortex. KU Leuven
Viewing the world, we are confronted with multiple visual objects, each of which might be composed of multiple parts. How exactly our brain is able to recognize and identify these objects very quickly and easily, and how it constructs a representation of these objects is not yet clear. In this doctoral thesis, we focused on two aspects of visual object representations: (1) how do we learn to recognize objects and (2) what kind of relationship ...
Representations of Osp (1/2N) and their quantum groups Ghent University
The quantum supergroups related to the Lie superalgebras Osp (1/2N) will be considered. Their finite-dimensional representations will be constructed, and the corresponding T-matrices will be investigated. Attention will be paid to the possible realization of these matrix elements by means of basic hypergeometric functions.
English specificational and predicative clauses: A functional-cognitive account of their representational and textual organisation KU Leuven
Specificational clauses set up a pragmatically presupposed variable – i.e. that is presumed to be known or to be taken for granted by the hearer (Lambrecht 1994: 52) –, e.g. the best option in (1a), and assign a specific value to it, e.g. the Hotel Boomerang.
(1a) Where to stay: the Parador El Hierro … has doubles from £80 a night, B&B. Or in Valverde, the best option [variable] is *the Hotel Boomerang* [value]. (WB)
The role ...
