MAC-Brain - Developing a Multi-scale account of Attentional Control as the constraining interface between vision and action: A cross-species investigation of relevant neural circuits in the human and macaque Brain (FLAG-ERA).
Scientific objectives
Attention is the key mechanism that enables us to navigate an overwhelming sensory environment by allowing us to select the most relevant information for further scrutiny. By ...
Transfer of fatty acids from plasma to follicular fluid: cross-species similarities and differences as assessed through cohort and intervention studies Ghent University
Oocytes are essential in maternal reproduction as they can be considered immature ‘gg cells’ The fate of an oocyte is to become fertilized and ultimately to grow into a fully functioning organism. This competence seems to be affected by the maternal micro-environment, the follicular fluid, in which oocytes develop. In this respect, increased levels of non-esterified fatty acids in the follicular environment of both high yielding dairy cattle ...
The evolutionary dynamics of hepacivirus cross-species transmissions: in search for the origin of the Hepatitis C Virus. KU Leuven
The availability of genomic data provides a major asset in characterizing the evolutionary dynamics that underlie viral emergence and establishment in human populations. These factors are, however, still unknown for one of the most important causes of severe chronic liver disease, the Hepatitis C Virus. This gap in our knowledge can to a large extent be attributed to the lack of a known reservoir of the virus. First discovered in 1989, HCV ...
Bilateral Research Cooperation with Quebec Cross-species combination of cohort and intervention studies to assess common metabolic factors related to infertility and the use of functional lipids for its treatment. Ghent University
Infertility has become a global epidemic for overweight women and high yielding dairy cattle and has ao been related to increased levels of non-esterified fatty acids (FA) in the follicular fluid. In a cohort study with human follicular fluid and dietary intervention study with dairy cattle we hypothesize that mono-unsaturated FA can partially alleviate the detrimental effect of non-esterified FA.
Post-translational modification in the oxidative stress response in plants Ghent University
The worldwide yield loss in cultivated crops due to drought, temperature, salt and pathogen-related stress is enormous. So, crop 'stress tolerance' becomes a major objective in plant biotechnology research. The warning message used by plants under stress are 'Reactive Oxygen Species' (ROS)’. ROS can function as a messenger through oxidation of amino acid residues in signaling proteins. In this way, the plant defense response can be switched ...
