Global cities as Knowledge Hubs: Multinational firms, Connectivity and R&D Locations KU Leuven
Multinational firms’ knowledge creating activities have become increasingly global in scope, yet tend to be concentrated in a distinct set of geographic knowledge hubs. The world’s leading internationally connected cities (‘global cities’) act as such knowledge hubs and host a disproportional share of high skilled workers, universities and innovative firms. The aim of this research project is to generate an in-depth understanding of the ...
The R&D Value Chain and Product Commercialization in the Pharmaceutical Industry KU Leuven
The conversion of promising ideas into commercialized products is a central feature of technological progress and economic growth. However, turning discoveries into marketable products or technologies is a major challenge. The objective of the proposed research project is to analyze how access to different pools of scientific and technological knowledge through different organizational structures during the drug development process, affect ...
R&D towards a High Rate Particle Detector for the CMS Experiment at the LHC Ghent University
In 2009, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the worldU+2019s most powerful accelerator became operational, producing mainly proton-proton collisions at multi-TeV center-of-mass energies. This allows experiments, such as the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS), to explore the so-far uncharted physics at this energy scale. One of the, in the meantime world-famous results of the first LHC physics run that recently ended, is the discovery a new particle ...

Measuring total factor productivity and understanding its determinants Ghent University
Our objective is to measure and explain the country-specific evolution in total factor productivity. A key novelty is that we model worldwide technology to be freely available but allow countries to differ in their absorptive capacity. We will further assess the impact of country-specific R&D efforts and demographic trends (ageing) on the level and evolution of their absorptive capacity.
