Exploring factors that influence and enhance probiotic survival in and colonization of the oral cavity. KU Leuven
The oral cavity harbors a complex microbial community containing up to 700 different genotypes .Some of these microbial communities develop on oral surfaces in structurally and functionally organized biofilms, also known as dental plaque. Dental plaque is a bacterial biofilm which is associated with tooth decay and periodontitis. Not all bacteria in dental plaque contribute to these diseases as they will only develop when specific pathogens ...
Antimicrobial potential of Streptococcus salivarius as probiotic for the upper respiratory tract. University of Antwerp
Lytic bacteriophages and probiotic Bacillus spp. as novel biocontrol agents of Motile Aeromonad Septicaemia (MAS) in farmed Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus): A holistic approach to disease management. Ghent University
Local bacteriophages and probiotic Bacillus spp. will be isolated and characterized. The isolates wil be tested against Aeromonas hydrophila, both in vivo and in vitro under lab conditions. Bacillus spp. will be combined together with selected bacteriophages to test for a synergistic effect under lab conditions. Semi-field trials will conducted on Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) for field verification.
The mode of action of Streptococcus salivarius as a key commensal in the nasopharynx and its potential as a probiotic treatment for the upper respiratory tract. University of Antwerp
Exploration and assessment of probiotic treatment of vaginal candidiasis. KU Leuven
Up to 75% of females worldwide encounter at least one episode of vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC) in their lifetime and 5%-10% of them suffers from recurrent infections (RVVC). Globally, RVVC is estimated to target 150 million women a year by 2030, leading to universal healthcare related and economic losses. Current treatment of (R)VVC is insufficient and resistance occurs frequently. Therefore, the development of additional, effective therapy ...
Insights into the lifestyle and adaptation factors of Dolosigranlum pigrum as probiotic for the upper respiratory tract. University of Antwerp
Engineering of an abscisic acid (ABA)-producing probiotic yeast strain to modulate host microbiota, intestinal health and inflammatory diseases Ghent University
Intestinal health is known to be strongly determined by the food ingested and by the microbes which populate the gut. In this project we will focus on the interactions between the plant phytohormone abscisic acid (ABA) and the gut microbiome. ABA has previously been shown to be involved in various immune and inflammatory diseases. However, anti-inflammatory effects need to be studied in more detail before ABA can be applied as a true drug ...
Development of Probiotic Clothing Ghent University
Body odor (BO) is a bacterial problem caused by the presence of the ‘rong’bacteria which transform sweat secretions into volatile malodorous compounds. Our research identified the main bacterial malodor perpetrators in the human armpits and clothes and developed a probiotic treatment both on skin and on clothes. This StarTT aims to further develop, optimize Probiotic Clothing protoypes towards protection against malodor in clothes, to obtain ...
