Sabbatical Peter Vermeersch: Minority activism in Perilous Times: The Politics of Being Russian, Belarusian, and Ukrainian in Poland KU Leuven
This sabbatical period is intended to enable the development of a new research project that aims to examine how relationships between minorities and majorities change in the context of a changing international context. Characterisation of rhizospheric and endophytic microbial communities of the Zn-hyperaccumulator Cardaminopsis halleri, the excluder C. arenosa, and the legume species Trifolium repens from old zinc and lead waste heaps in Poland Hasselt University
Characterisation of the relation between florsitic diversity, soil microbial diversity and biogeochemical processes in a pristine wetland (Bierbza, Poland) Ghent University
With this project, we want to investigate whether there is a link between floristic diversity and microbial community structure and how this affects nitrogen biogeochemistry. The specific objectives are: 1. To study the effect of changeing plant diversity on microbial community structure and key microorganisms 2. To quantify N-biogeochemistry and the uptake of N-species by micro-organisms under varying plant diversity 3. To study whether ...

EPS management in the OLAND process Ghent University
Oxygen-limited autotrophic nitrification/denitrification (OLAND) is a microbiological process to remove nitrogen from wastewater by partial nitritation and anammox. The biomass structure is determined by extracellular polymeric substances (EPS). This research wants (i) to determine which bacteria produce which EPS, (ii) to elucidate the influence of EPS quantity and composition on the process, and (iii) to reach an optimal EPS production.
Trauma, Testimony, and Community in Postcolonial Literature in English (J. M. Coetzee, Caryl Phillips, and Eavan Boland) Ghent University
This research project examines how trauma theory can break with Eurocentrism and thus realize its self-declared ethical potential. It consists of a theoretical part in which the possibility and point of U+201CpostcolonializingU+201D trauma theory are investigated, and a practical part made up of three case studies of postcolonial literary oeuvres that bear witness to the suffering engendered by colonial oppression.
