The autonomic nervous system as a mediating mechanism between psychobiological processes in the central nervous system, pain sensitivity and symptoms in functional pain syndromes. KU Leuven
Inspiratory muscle fatigability, back muscle fatigability and prioprioceptive postural control in persons with recurrent low back pain. KU Leuven
High-resolution manometry evaluation of the role of colonic dysmotility in symptom generation and therapeutic outcomes in functional bowel disorders. KU Leuven
Colonic function is impaired in functional bowel disorders (FBDs), which are characterized by disordered bowel movements (diarrhoea, constipation) and pain, discomfort and bloating. The most important FBDs are functional constipation, chronic diarrhea and the irritable bowel syndrome. We hypothesize that contractions of the colon and their control are disturbed in FBDs, and that this explains their symptoms both in terms of disordered bowel ...

Food-induced Duodenal Immune Activation: Symptom Trigger and Therapeutic Target in Functional Dyspepsia KU Leuven
Functional dyspepsia (FD) affects 7.2% of the adult population and has a significant impact on quality of life. Patients present with symptoms in the epigastrium, which include early satiation, postprandial fullness and epigastric pain or burning. Routine investigations including endoscopy are macroscopically normal. Gastric abnormalities, including delayed emptying, gastric hypersensitivity and impaired accommodation, have been implicated in ...

Why do asymptomatic rotator cuff tears become painful? - Effect of biomechanical, psychosocial and pain related factors Ghent University
Aim 1 is to determine if biomechanical and psychosocial factors differ between three groups: symptomatic rotator cuff (RC) tear, asymptomatic RC-tear, and healthy controls without RC-tear. Comparing those three groups is necessary in order to attribute possible differences to the presence of symptoms or the presence of a tear. Aim 2 is to determine risk factors for developing symptomatic RC-tears.
Development and validation of a screening tool for central sensitisation pain in cancer survivors KU Leuven
In addition to fatigue, pain is the most common frequent persistent symptom in cancer survivors. Pain following cancer leads to poor quality of life and impaired daily functioning. Identifying the origin or mechanism of the pain is a critical step in clinical decision-making. Awareness on the presence of so called central sensitisation pain in cancer survivors has increased past decades. In this case pain can be explained by enhanced ...
