Projects
Design and developement of diagnostics and drugs for neurodegenerative, immunological and microbial diseases KU Leuven
The research aims at two important goals:
1) The development of (fluorescent) tools to visualize biomarkers in neurodegenerative diseases as research tools or diagnostics
In this part of the work fluorescent molecules are developed and optimized. Key goals are to increase the biocompatibility, stability, specificity and (to later enable in vivo imaging applications) a suitably red-shifted fluorescence. Key biomarkers of ...
Developing fluorescent markers for neurodegenerative diseases as research tools and lead compounds for diagnostics KU Leuven
BEyOND: Brain pEt to Overcome Neurodegenerative Diseases. KU Leuven
BEyOND trains ESR fellows in innovative approaches to develop quantitative brain PET imaging for better patient care and accelerated drug development for neurodegenerative diseases. Brain disorders are a major public health problem in Europe, and pharmaceutical drugs are the predominant therapeutic approach. In order to manage the constantly increasing healthcare and drug development costs, there is an urgent need for next-generation ...
Precision genomics in neurodegenerative brain disease: from patients to small model organisms and single cells Ghent University
We will study genomic aspects of rare neurodegenerative brain disorders (NBD). First, we will establish a multidisciplinary clinical neurogenetics program at UZ Gent. Second, we will use fruit flies to study the potential pathogenic nature of novel NBD-related genetic variants. Third, we will use single-cell sequencing to study the role of genomic mosaicism in neurodegeneration.
Phenotyping socio−emotional profiles in presymptomatic and symptomatic neurodegenerative disorders. KU Leuven
The project uses a translational and multidisciplinary approach to investigate socio−emotional functions in neurodegeneration. We will first valorize research findings on socio−emotional deficits for use in clinical practice. The output objective is an automated test battery and classification program. The second aim is to phenotype emotion perception abilities in presymptomatic (genetic variants) and symptomatic neurodegeneration. The ...
Towards an integrative model of spoken and written word processing in the intact brain and its decline in primary progressive aphasia and neurodegenerative disease KU Leuven
Investigating the role of DPP6 in neurodegenerative dementia: an hypothesis based approach. University of Antwerp
Genetic profiling of patients with neurodegenerative disease to identify markers for (early) diagnosis and disease progression KU Leuven
Characterization of the impact of proteins linked to neurodegenerative diseases in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae KU Leuven
Our society will have to face an estimated of about 65 million cases of dementia in 2030 and 115 million cases by the year 2050. Alzheimer's Disease represents the majority of these cases. Despite tremendous efforts of the research community to unravel the disease mechanisms, there is still a lack of insight in disease pathogenesis. This disorder is substantially heterogeneous, both at the level of genetics as well as at the level of clinical ...
