Functional characterization of the polymophic membrane proteins of chlamydia psittaci. Ghent University
chlamydia psittaci is an obligatie intracellular bacterium causing respiratory disease in birds. thee are 9 genotypes within the species. some genotypes ar more cirulent. the molecular mechanisms behand these biological differences are not understood. this project wants to find out if the pmp protein family might play a role in the difference in virulence, host specificity and tissue tropism.
Combining fluorescence microscopy and microfluidic devices as an innovative in-situ characterization technique for thin-film (nano)composite membranes KU Leuven
Interfacially polymerized (IP) polyamide (PA) thin-film composite membranes (TFC) are dominant in desalination, wastewater treatment and other industrial separation processes thanks to their high water fluxes and unrivaled salt rejection. However, these membranes suffer a trade-off between permeance and selectivity. A promising strategy to overcome this trade-off is by incorporating fillers into the selective top-layer of TFC membranes to ...
Proton-conducting materials based on metal-organic frameworks and protic salts as membranes for high temperature polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells. KU Leuven
Polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) are high-efficient and environmentally friendly power sources for a sustainable society. Particularly, high temperature PEMFCs operating between 100 and 200 °C are desirable. However, proton-conducting membranes with high proton conductivity under conditions of non-humidification and high temperatures are urgently needed. In this project we intend to develop novel composite membranes based on ...
ARF6-mediated endocytosis: the missing link to the gamma-secretase independent role of presenilin 1 in neuronal membrane trafficking. KU Leuven
Light-based 3D printing using LEGO-inspired chemistry for tympanic membrane regeneration Ghent University
Chronic otitis media refers to a group of complex infectious and inflammatory diseases of the middle ear, causing permanent tympanic membrane perforations and conductive hearing impairment. Tympanoplasty and myringoplasty are commonly used surgeries to eradicate the disease and to reconstruct the eardrum. However, both strategies are associated with drawbacks including recurrent perforations, high capital investment, time-consuming quality ...
Small heat shock proteins (HSPBs) sequestration at the outer mitochondrial membrane abrogates oxidative stress induced intrinsic apoptosis by preventing the release of cytochrome c from the mitochondria. University of Antwerp
Computational modeling reveals the influence of lipid membrane phases on fluorescent probes' optical properties Hasselt University
Protective gastro-intestinal effects of bovine milk fat globule membrane (MFGM) glycoproteins. University of Antwerp
Metastable noble metal nanoparticles: synthesis, spectroscopic characterization and catalytic testing KU Leuven
Platinum and palladium are widely used as catalysts in both chemical plants and in the catalytic converters of cars. However, they are rare and expensive, motivating a strong desire to find alternatives. Silver, being cheaper and far more abundant, has been in the focus of catalytic research for some time, but has only found success in a handful of industrial chemical processes. Recently, however, researchers have developed the controlled ...
