The proposed study will analyze data on the mother's mental health in the perinatal period and the behavior and development of her child in the postpartum period and up to preschool age. In the context of this study, 'perinatal' means; the period of pregnancy, birth and until the offspring is one year old. Khat use is widely prevalent in East-Africa and frequently consumed by women during pregnancy. Research on the consequences of prenatal khat exposure for child development and parenting scarce. Therefore, this project will examine the effects of khat use during pregnancy on child development, maternal mental health and parenting in the Jimma region in Ethiopia.

Maternal mycotoxins exposure and child growth: a prospective cohort study in rural Ethiopia Ghent University
Environmental exposures such as metabolomes and mycotoxins have been linked to adverse birth outcomes and poor child growth in low – and middle income countries. Findings to date however, are inconclusive. Therefore, we aimed to assess the potential exposure to multiple mycotoxins and metabolomics during pregnancy and the associations with foetal growth trajectories and adverse birth outcomes in rural Ethiopia.
