STRAtified Dosing based on Augmented renal clearance for CEFtriaxone in patients with severe community-acquired pneumonia: STRADA-CEF trial. KU Leuven
This project aims to increase the clinical outcome and cost-effectiveness of ceftriaxone therapy in patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) with severe community-acquired pneumonia (sCAP).
This will be accomplished by using a simple dose optimization strategy, being dose stratification from the standard-of-care 2g once daily (i.e., q24h) to 2g q12h in patients with increased renal function
(i.e., augmented renal clearance ...
Porous Networks for Gas Sensing KU Leuven
Air pollution is one of the most pressing environmental challenges worldwide. While outdoor air pollution appears often in the media, the effects of indoor air pollution are not to be underestimated since the average person spends about 22 h per day indoors. Many chemicals that decrease the quality of indoor air are emitted by carpets, paints, furniture, etc. The majority of these pollutants are volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Since VOCs ...

Green fiscal policy in high debt and ageing society: low(er) growth and distributional effects matter. Ghent University
In order to combat climate change, economists propose carbon taxation to reduce emissions. Carbon taxes are deemed regressive and increase inequality. Current literature is divided on the ways to combat this adverse effect. Literature on carbon taxation and double dividends has several flaws. Depending on the model, labour market imperfections, heterogeneity and demographic change are missing. These elements are important drivers of inter- ...
Optimizing Cardio-metabolic Health of People Living with HIV through the use of Bioactive Compounds in Indigenous Food Species in Uganda KU Leuven
Background: An estimated 1.5 million Ugandans are living with HIV, with 85% of 1.5 million are adults enrolled on Antiretroviral Therapy (ART). Although the advent of ART coincided with increased longevity and general quality of life of People Living with HIV (PLWH), altered metabolism among PLWH is widely reported. Sub optimal metabolic health among this population is caused by a cluster of factors such as ART associated factors and other ...
NonSurvivors: Childhood diet, disease, and death as telltale signs of the physical and social environment in post-medieval Aalst Ghent University
This project assesses the physical stress children in post-medieval Aalst faced, in relation to socio-economic status and living conditions. Historical sources show a low child survivor rate in poor families in this context, yet do not elucidate why. NonSurvivors will analyze the children’s skeletal remains for direct data on disease, diet, and death. The archaeological wealth of Aalst, with exceptional preservation of human remains of all ...

Electro-chemical sensor interface ICs for next-generation Point-of-Care and implantable electronics KU Leuven
Gastrointestinal (GI) diseases are quite common and can be very severe. For example, GI cancers account for up to 25% of all cancer deaths in developed countries and functional GI disorders bring significant inconvenience in daily life. Since the GI tract is the primary channel through which materials enter and exit the human body, it is also a great location for obtaining useful information related to a number of metabolic diseases. Current ...
Functionalised nanofibrous organosilica membranes for advanced affinity-based separation applications Ghent University
Challenges in clean water availability have risen over the years, and especially third world countries are in great need of low-cost water purification techniques, such as separation membranes. By implementing functionalised organosilica nanofibrous membranes, an affinity-based separation mechanism at low energy-cost can be developed that withstands harsh environmental conditions. These membranes should have a desirable hydrophobicity to tune ...
