Limits to land take. No net land take and the Flemish bouwshift as goals of sustainable land use. KU Leuven
This doctoral project aims to deepen the scientific understanding of the spatial concept of no net land take and, more specifically, for the special case of Flanders. Setting limits to additional land take and spatial growth is part of the global sustainable development agenda (SDGs) and European environmental goals (EU, 2011).
This objective is much discussed and ambitious for the Flemish region since the northern part of Belgium has ...

Long-term assessment of land use and cover changes, land degradation and resilience in Tigray (Ethiopia) Ghent University
Land use and cover change studies do generally not go beyond the 40 years of Landsat imagery or the 60 years of aerial photography. This study, in which closely and remotely sensed imagery are used, makes a geographically explicit analysis of land degradation and resilience over 150 years, as well as future scenarios in the highlands of Tigray (Ethiopia).
Remote sensing image processing algorithms for land use and land cover monitoring systems KU Leuven
The project objective is to explore the potential of remote sensing image processing algorithms for land cover/use monitoring:
- State of the art image processing approaches will be conceptualized, optimized and tested in different case studies.
- The resulting image processing algorithms will be positively tested in open source software tools and made publicly available (including training data and user manuals).

Analysis of past and projected future land use change and its impact on sediment fluxes in the Rwizi catchment KU Leuven
The project aims strengthening academic research capacity at the universities of Mbarara and Gulu (Uganda) by means of the training of two researchers and several postdoctoral researchers in the field of integrated watershed management. Secondly the project will develop fundamental research on the, hitherto largely overlooked, coupling between demographic developments on the one hand, and the degradation of soil and water resources on the ...
Detection and spatial analysis of urbanization and land use change in small island states, by means of GIS and remote sensing techniques KU Leuven
This study will collect reliable longitudinal data on urbanization and land use change on Caribbean SIDS. Remote sensing procedures will be developed to detect urban growth patterns from 1980-present. Comparative research will explore the drivers and controlling factors of urban growth. Based on this, a land use change simulation model allows to develop future land use change scenario's that can be used in spatial and economic planning ...
Greening intensive farming landscapes: evaluating land use strategies in terms of biodiversity and ecosystem service provisioning and their tradeoffs with production and farmer income KU Leuven
Throughout history, European landscapes have been strongly influenced by farming practices. As a result, extensively managed farming landscapes provided a habitat to many species and nowadays, semi-natural habitats form the focus of nature conservation in Europe. During the past century, these farming landscapes became increasingly intensified, increasing food production levels throughout the region. However, the intensification of ...
Community, Control and Commons. Access to Land, Use Rights and Social Power Relations in the Belgian Ardennes between 1750 and 1900 Ghent University
This research project aims to reassess historiographical debates on shifting power relations in rural
communities during the transition period 1750-1900, when village communities were gradually
incorporated into modern society in Western Europe. The ambition of this project is to approach
these shifts by analysing social property relations, which appear at the heart of power struggles
between and among local actors, ...
