Pectin Structure Functions Based on Ionic Interactions in Plant Based Food Systems KU Leuven
Foods are multicomponent systems in which interactions between components are very likely to occur. Amongst all food systems, given their interesting nutritional profile, their low carbon footprint, etc. , the consumption of plant-based food systems is increasingly advised. Pectin is an important component in such systems and interacts with other food components such as metal ions. These interactions do not only impact the rheological ...
Understanding how biotic interactions influence the distribution of epiphytic orchids in tropical forests: an integrated network approach KU Leuven
Understanding the factors that limit species distribution is a longstanding question in ecology. In land plants, species distribution is simultaneously limited by multiple factors, including climate, dispersal ability, competition, and species' physiological tolerance. The ecological requirements of obligate inter-specific interactions impose additional, often over-looked, limitations. How complex interactions influence plant species ...

Testing the contribution of plant-soil biotic interactions to the homogenization of forest understorey plant communities Ghent University
The study of biotic homogenization has become a central topic in ecological research. For forest understorey communities, changes in abiotic conditions or disturbances are cited to cause the homogenization, but plant-soil interactions at the much smaller scale are expected to be important as well. Therefore, we will asses the role of plant-soil feedbacks in the homogenization dynamics of forest understorey communties.
Biotic interactions across size classes as structuring factors for marine benthic ecosystem functioning. Ghent University
We will investigate how the activities of macrobenthic ecosystems engineers cascade in the creation of microhabitatiats, thereby structuring diversity an dcommunity composition of microbial communities. Focus will be on nitrifying and denitryfing bacteria and Archaea. At the same time, important ecosystem functions ill be measured in order to provide insights in the direct relations between macrobenthos -microbial communities - ecosystem ...
Plant-pollinator and plant-soil interactions in houndstongue: biotic selection mosaics in a plant species from spatially structured dune habitat? Ghent University
Habitat patches in fragmented landscapes are expected to harbor distinct pollinator and herbivore communities according to patch configuration and local environmental factors. Consequently, plant populations in fragmented landscapes are expected to experience distinct selection pressures exerted by local pollinators and herbivores. The goal of this study is to examine these selection pressures and their feedback with plant population genetic ...
Study of the structuring role of biotic interactions within the macrobenthic community of Belgian sandy beaches Ghent University
Biotic interactions play a major role in biological communities and were intensively studied on rocky shores. The aim of this project is to investigate the importance of biotic interactions in the Eurydice pulchra-Scolelepis squamata sandy beach community, the macrobenthoscommunity on the upper part of the intertidal range of Belgian sandy beaches.
