Molecular elucidation of the evolutionary success of Salmonella Kentucky ST198 KU Leuven
Salmonella enterica serovar Kentucky (S. Kentucky) is a common cause of gastro-enteritis. Although resistance to critically important antibiotics for human medicine is rare among Salmonella species, the clonal variant S. Kentucky ST198 poses an exemption. Phylogeographic analysis indicates this clone first emerged in Egypt around 1989, before disseminating into Northern, Southern and Western Africa, and then further to the Middle East, Asia ...

Psychometric analysis of certainty-based marking on multiple-choice items KU Leuven
The University of Hasselt uses certainty-based marking for some of the exams with multiple-choice items. For each item, students choose their response and indicate their level of certainty. The final mark is effected both by the correctness of the response and the chosen level of certainty. This study investigates for six exams how first-year students physiotherapy use these answering instructions.
Study of wheat subaleurone proteins and their technofunctional performance KU Leuven
The goal of this project is to study and gain insight in the characteristics of wheat subaleurone proteins and their techno-functional relevance in cereal based food systems. Literature indicates that the subaleurone protein content can go as high as 54%, which considerably exceeds the endosperm protein content of 8 to 15%. Moreover, these proteins would consist mostly of gluten proteins which display visco-elastic network formation potential ...
Adaptive model reduction strategies for fast prediction and optimization of the vibro-acoustic performance of dynamical systems with damping KU Leuven
Over the past years, the dynamic and acoustic qualities of products have become an increasingly important design criterion in many industrial sectors. Moreover, in order to improve the cost-efficiency of products, lightweight designs are emerging. However, their high stiffness-to-mass ratio can often be the cause of noise and vibration problems. Therefore, it is customary to use complex damping materials such as viscoelastic and porous ...
Hierarchically Structured Porous Bodies from Capillary Suspensions KU Leuven
The combination of ceramic’s intrinsic properties such as chemical resistance, temperature stability, and mechanical properties, with the low density and high permeability of porous materials has been of interest in many industrial applications such as in biomedical, filtration, energy storage, heat exchange, gas adsorption, insulation, as lightweight construction materials or as catalyst monoliths or catalyst supports. The ceramics need to ...
