Do Future Priests Need an Active Knowledge of Latin? The Debate in the Preparatory Commission for Studies and Universities KU Leuven
In this article, I describe the discussions on the use of Latin in the formation of seminarians during the preparatory period of Vatican II. The debates on this topic make clear that already before the Council knowledge of Latin was declining among future priests and their professors. As a result, soon after the Council, Latin would disappear as the teaching language in the Roman Catholic Faculties of Theology.
