Several PhD positions in electrical power engineering: HVDC grids and decision support for grid operator KU Leuven
PhD-N-1:AC/DC Transmission System Planning Under Uncertainty A significant amount of investments are necessary to have a robust and reliable transmission network for a renewable future. This PhD project as part of the NEPTUNE project funded by the Belgian Energy Transition Fund aims to develop a methodology for robust planning of the future network under uncertainty. The modelling of flexible elements such as HVDC, FACTS and storage will be ...
Semi-Supervised and Explainable Machine Learning with an Application to the Low-Voltage Grid KU Leuven
Due to the enormous increase in available data and the computational power needed to process it, interest in the use of machine learning (ML) keeps increasing as it is able to extract valuable insights from this data. In an effort to make it easier to use ML in practice, this thesis proposes several novel ML techniques driven by two industry needs: (1) to make machine learning systems understand what the user wants and (2) to make the user ...
High-frequency power quality: influence of grid components on the emission between 2 and 500 kHz in low-voltage networks. Ghent University
Electromagnetic compatibility is based on defining compatibility levels, immunity tests and emission tests. Emission is determined by the impedance of the network and its components (sources, loads, grid configuration). By modelling the low-voltage grid between 2 - 500 kHz, the impedance and attenuation can be determined. These parameters are essential to determine emission, propagation and interactions in the grid.
Advanced methodology and tools taking advantage of storage and FLEXibility in transmission and distribution grid PLANning KU Leuven
The current high-speed deployment rate of non-programmable Renewable Energy Sources (RES) is making transmission network planning activities more and more complex and affected by a high level of uncertainty. Because network investments are capital intensive and the lifetime of the infrastructure spans several decades, it may happen that when a new line is commissioned it is no longer the best option and it might be partially regarded as a ...
Grid Aspects of Power System Adequacy KU Leuven
One of the primary design objectives of any power system is to ensure it can meet the demand in all but very exceptional situations. Adequacy outlooks, monitoring this, are gaining more and more significance due to the rapid replacement of the generation assets, thus influencing policy and investment decision. The increasingly high penetration of renewable generation accentuates the importance of power transmission over long distances. This ...
Energy grid and power markets KU Leuven
Background: The energy landscape is changing drastically. The share of renewables has increased significantly, and will continue to do so in the foreseeable future. In liberalized energy markets, the interplay between the different actors, markets and policy interventions, together with the high uncertainty (e.g., regarding technological progress) has made it more difficult and at the same time more important to anticipate the impact of ...

Ancillary services from HVDC grid elements in a hybrid AC/DC power systems KU Leuven
The research topic will focus on 'Ancillary services from HVDC grid elements in a hybrid AC/DC power systems'. It will involve Data collection and literature study on the quantifying the need for inertial response support from HVDC Systems, the possible implementation techniques, preparation of user-defined case studies and finally carrying out cost- benefits analysis of potential implications of inertia support from HVDC interconnectors from ...
