Computational analysis of flow-induced vibrations in fuel rod bundles of next generation nuclear reactors Ghent University
Currently, lead fast reactors are being designed to reduce the radioactive waste and its lifetime. In this PhD, the vibrations of the fuel rods in the liquid metal will be analyzed using three-dimensional calculations on high-performance computers. The flow-induced vibrations will be calculated by coupling state-of-the-art programmes, namely one for the liquid metal flow and one for the vibrating rods.
Microstructure-sensitive multiaxial modelling of fatigue damage initiation and evolution KU Leuven
Real-time optimization of bio-inspired wings using the deformable overset method and machine learning Ghent University
The design of airplanes or any wing-like applications involves shape optimization to maximize energy harvesting from a flow. Nevertheless, the final design must reach a compromise for several operating conditions. Morphing structures adapt their shape as a function of the environment and offer a broader range of optimal performances. Recent advances in the different fields of fluid-structure interaction have confirmed the feasibility of smart ...
Multi-physical model reduction in service of parameter identification and virtual sensing of lubricated transmissions KU Leuven
Lubricated mechanical transmissions are inherently multi-scale and multi-physical systems. Their proper functioning relies on interactions amongst a wide range of physical phenomena (contact dynamics, fluid-structure interaction, heat transfer) operating at different spatial and temporal scales. In order to improve the performance, energy consumption and durability of these systems, accurate information regarding key states and parameters is ...

Improving non-invasive diagnostics of cardiovascular disease using ultrasound: development of new blood flow and vessel wall quantification techniques using multiphysics modeling and in-vivo validation studies. Ghent University
Vascular applications of medical ultrasound still show severe limitations. A multiphysical simulation tool was previously developed to support the development of new techniques. This project will use our simulationmodel to develop vascular strain imaging, a highly useful tool when screening for vulnerable arterial lesions (e.g. plaques). Both conventional and new imaging approaches will be explored using human and murine data.
Gas-Liquid Interface Dynamics in Non-Isothermal Sloshing: Experimental Analysis and Simplified Modeling KU Leuven
The dynamics of a gas-liquid interface stems from a synergy of forces, primarily involving inertia, viscous dissipation, gravity and capillarity. This work focuses on the latter, which arises from the surface tension at the gas-liquid interface and the interactions with the solid surface. This phenomenon impacts many industrial applications, such as coating, inkjet printing, oil recovery, microfluidics, and medical laboratory-on-a-chip ...
Metallogenesis of the Cu-Co deposits in the Central African Copperbelt, information from REE patterns and the Lu-Hf isotopic system. KU Leuven
This PhD thesis is centered on the Central African Copperbelt, a Neoproterozoic stratiform Cu-Co ore province, and consists of three main parts. The first part focuses on the geotectonic evolution of the basement units in the vicinity of the Katanga basin that hosts the ore deposits. The second part uses rare earth element patterns in gangue carbonates associated with the ores as proxies for hydrothermal mineralization-related processes. The ...
