Paleo-GLOFs: Assessing the impact of climate change on the frequency of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods in Patagonia Ghent University
The frequency and magnitude of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOF) seem to have increased worldwide in the last decades, although there is currently no reliable scientific evidence supporting this claim. This project will investigate changes in GLOF frequency in Patagonia during the late Holocene (the last ~3000 years) by studying flood deposits recorded in the sediments of Baker fjord.

This project will (1) reconstruct variations in paleoclimate (Late Glacial, Holocene), based on multi-proxy sedimentological and geochemical studies of sedimentary records from two lakes in Chilean Patagonia, and (2) compare these new data and integrate them with data generated by a number of ongoing studies on marine and fjord sediments.
