The Division MeBios (Mechatronics, Biostatistics and Sensors) investigates the interaction between biological systems and physical processes. The emphasis is on the measurement of properties of biological products and process variables, the analysis of the measured signals by means of advanced statistical methods, process and equipment design, optimisation and control. Mathematical models to describe the working principles of biological ...
The Division Animal and Human Health Engineering (A2H) is a new division within the Department of Biosystems at KU Leuven consisting of a transdisciplinary team of researchers who are active in the field of animal and human health engineering.
The mission of A2H is stated as follows:
Overall, the research carried out in this laboratory focuses on the spatial and quantitative assessment of biological and man-induced patterns and processes at the landscape and habitat level both in rural, urban and natural settings. We aim at coupling traditional research on forestry, landscape elements, land use, and biotic communities with earth observation, spatial data sciences, the statistical modeling environment, and planning tools. ...
The ongoing research is concentrated in the fields of: 1. Interdisciplinary instruments for environmental management including Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) (e.g. evaluation of EIA procedures and Environmental Impact Statements (EISs), development of EIA guidelines and recommendations for good practice, strategic environmental assessment (SEA), SEA and sustainable urban development); 2. Environmental Health (mainly related to ...
The Acoustics & Vibration Research Group (AVRG) central goal is to conduct fundamental and applied research in the broad field of Acoustics & Vibration, with special emphasis on Experimental and Operational Modal Analysis, Frequency-Domain Maximum Likelihood Identification of Multivariable Systems, Damage Assessment, Optical Measurement Techniques and Sound Quality.
Economically, ecologically and socially sustainable dairy and beef production is our focus. Through production, digestibility and balance trials, we evaluate feed, fodder, new feedstuffs and additives. Using open-circuit chambers, we study reduction of emissions (methane) and excretion (N, P). Animal health and welfare are studied. We optimize dairy and beef quality, develop innovative housing systems and perform on-farm research.
Research within the department BETR (developed within the research units SPET and BEDA) currently deals with the following issues: 1. The influence of extrinsic video feedback on the motor learning process during the performance of basic gymnastic skills; 2. Computer-assisted scouting and match/game analysis system (scouting system); 3. The role of different feedback systems on the acquisition of gymnastic skills; 4. The time of information ...
This research aims for yield improvement and high-quality, sustainable plant production with respect for people, animals and the environment. We optimize and evaluate (new) crop husbandry techniques (rotations, new crops, soil management, nutrients) and seed processing techniques. We develop sustainable soil management and organize official variety testing. Some interface exists between crop husbandry and environment/nature.
