Forest Conversion Experiment Pijnven-Bosland. Setting-up a large-scaled tree-diversity experiment, part of the international FORBIO forest ecosystem research project Ghent University
This project aims at establishing a large-scaled experiment that will allow to quantify the effect of tree species diversity on forest ecosystem functioning. The experiment will be established on a 8 ha site situated in Hechtel-Eksel, in the state forest Pijnven. In total 25 000 trees of five different species will be planted.
Hybrid Laser-Electrochemical Micromachining Technology: Machine Design and Process Analysis by Simulation and Experiments KU Leuven
This thesis proposes a novel tool-based hybrid laser-electrochemical micromachining (laser-ECM) process which exploits synergy of laser and electrochemical process energies along the same machining axis, thereby enhancing the application potential of both processes while compensating and minimizing their limitations. This process combines features from jet-electrochemical machining (jet-ECM) and water jet guided laser processes into a new ...
Size matters! Assessing effect sizes in single-case experiments using randomization tests with applications for the treatment of chronic pain. KU Leuven
This dissertation concerns the use of randomization tests (RTs) for the analysis of experimental data from single-case experimental designs (SCEDs). This type of data often exhibit characteristics that violate the statistical assumptions made by parametric significance tests. For this reason the RT has been proposed as a viable technique for single-case data analysis as it does not require distributional assumptions or an assumption of random ...
Age discrimination in hiring: innovative experiments to identify barriers more thoroughly and to test solutions Ghent University
One of the most pressing social and economic challenges is the population ageing. To address this challenge, governments have focussed on making work more attractive to older employees. However, scholars have shown that age discrimination is an important obstacle on the employer side. In this respect, identifying discrimination, which has been the focus in this literature, is relevant but the ultimate goal is to set a policy against ...
Modelling of moored floating structures and marine renewable energy technologies using a non-linear numerical approach and experiments in wave testing facilities. Ghent University
Moored floating structures are connected to the seabed through mooring line systems composed of cables or chains, and have wide applications in coastal and offshore engineering. Moored floating offshore wind turbines and Wave Energy Converters (WECs) are examples of such structures from the field of Marine Renewable Energy (MRE). Mooring systems can represent a considerable part of the total cost of MRE technologies and they influence their ...
New paths in neutrino-nucleus modeling for neutrino-oscillation experiments Ghent University
Worldwide, several collaborations are working on the extension of our knowledge about neutrino masses, mixing angles and the CP violating phase. The analyses of neutrino-oscillation experiments however suffer from the tension between the need for fast Monte-Carlo simulations and for a microscopic description of the nuclear processes governing the neutrino-nucleus interactions. The goal of this project is to combine the expertise of the Ghent ...
