The exegesis of Gennadius of Constantinople: the Commentary on Hosea as a new way into his works. KU Leuven
Gennadius I of Constantinople, patriarch of the capital of the Eastern Roman Empire from 458 to 471, was an important intellectual figure of late antiquity who was deeply involved in the theological disputes tearing apart the Church of his time. However, many of Gennadius’ works have been lost over the centuries, and others have come down to us only as fragments, a fact which has hampered research on this once renowned intellectual. Starting ...
The History of Exegesis and “Marginal” Books of the New Testament: The Patristic Reception History of 1 Peter KU Leuven
This project revolves around the volume of Novum Testamentum Patristicum that I have been assigned by the editors of the series, which will contain a thorough assessment of, and commentary on, the Patristic reception of 1 Peter 2:11-5:14 up to the eight century. It is an enquiry into the nature of the authority assigned to a marginal New Testament letter — 1 Peter — in Late Antiquity. As such, it builds upon the results of my recently ...

The visions of Hildegard van Bingen in the context of twelfth-century performative exegesis. Ghent University
This project examines the use of allegory in twelfth-century exegetic literature from monastic circles. The central text is Hildegard of Bingen’s visionary trilogy, which is linked to allegorical commentaries and parables. The project examines the hypothesis that this use of allegory is didactic and serves to dramatise the reader’s role in the text.
Fragmenting and Reshaping the Greek Patristic Exegesis of Isaiah in Late Antiquity: The Case of (Ps.-)Basil of Caesarea and Procopius of Gaza KU Leuven
This project aims to study the genesis, structure and relation of two Greek Late-Antique Christian exegetical works on Isaiah: the Enarratio attributed to Basil of Caesarea (CPG 2911) and the Epitome of Procopius of Gaza (CPG 7434). It is the first thorough assessment of the Epitome, and a fresh enquiry regarding the complex, contentious and still unresolved problem of the authenticity and authorship of the ...
The role of Aristotle's criticisms of Plato in the development of ancient Platonism. KU Leuven
The conventional historiography of ancient Platonism follows patterns that ultimately go back to Antiquity itself, yet overlooks certain continuities as well as discontinuities. This project chooses an unorthodox approach in that it does not try to reflect the issues emphasised in the sources, but instead selects one particular angle of approach: Aristotle’s critical discussion of Platonic views. By analyzing Platonic responses to Aristotle’s ...

This dissertation investigates the role that Biblical reference frameworks have played in the creation of the three contemporary Dutch Quran translations of Kramers (1956), Leemhuis (1989) and Verhoef (2015). The research consists on the one hand of a theoretical part in which a number of themes (religious translation, Arabic translation tradition, Qur’an translation, inimitability of the Qur’an, etc.) are treated from a historical and ...

First of all, these texts will be translated into English for the very first time using Hörner’s main text (1972) as a base and they will be provided with explanatory notes. After that, a critical interpretation of the text will be given ...
